Star Trek Discovery Episode 11 (Week of 1/14/18)

Haven’t watched yet but wanted to start a thread.

Tyler is Voq, Georgiu is the emperor. Snore

I continue to dislike the Mirror Universe, (outside of the 2 parter gimmick in Enterprise, which I loved), and the Disco-Klingons. The only good episodes were the non-klingon parts of the pilot and the prime universe episodes which feature 0% or close to it Klingon. It’s not quite bad enough for me to give up though, so I’ll still be watching next week.

I enjoyed the episode. Yeah the “twists” were all predicted but the execution was good and I am interested to see where it goes.

It redeemed itself slightly over the prior episode - in that TyVoq is now fully exposed (they coulda waited a second or two loinger to beam him up). They didn’t drag that out as I had feared.

Everything else was predictable - and I really tire of Burnham’s ‘dear diary’ aspect of the who fracking thing - I know its consistent and that this is her story (more/less) - but its annoying.

Can anyone explain the layout of the bridge on Burnham’s ship? It appears to be on the belly of the saucer, but it has windows in the ceiling.

I couldn’t be bothered to rewatch, but didn’t they make great play of painting out ‘USS’ for ‘ISS’ on the Discovery last week, only for there to be a panning shot across the hull of the ‘USS Shenzou’ this week in the ‘upside down’? My heart sank last week when they were replicating uniforms etc as it meant having spent so much budget on the trappings of the nega-verse, we were going to be spending several episodes there. Boring. The only point of narrative interset to me was that she learned how a klingon might rationalise making peace, but was this the best way to write that?
There’s absolutely zero tension in the question ‘will they ever get home?’
I enjoyed the first 9 episodes but these two have been poor. Imho

Logically, Discovery shouldn’t continue to exist in the prime universe. They’ve got knowledge of the Mirror Universe, information that could save the USS Defiant, and a working knowledge of how to create instantaneous travel throughout the galaxy. This is information that should not become public knowledge within the timeframe of the prime universe.

It said ISS Shenzhou.

I felt the multiple camera-goes-through-the-looking-glass shots were a bit much.

And Tilly’s technobabble for saving Stamets made me want to barf. Just wake me when you’re done re-kafoobling the energymotron… or whatever.

Im not understanding at all how we’ve got this Voq / Tyler mash up. Is it Voq’s body surgically altered to pass as human? In which case how have they imprinted the Tyler persona?

It’s best not to think much about it.

Have you watched other Trek series? This series has about 2% of the technobabble of TNG/DS9 (didn’t watch VOY/ENT aside from a few episodes of voyager which seemed even more technobabble reliant than the previous series)
How did getting Tyler to the Discovery work? The discovery wasn’t just hanging out nearby the Shennzu, right? And transporters are relatively short ranged. So how is it that they immediately picked up Tyler, and how is it that they instantly knew he had betrayed Burnham and was a criminal? Without a communication from Burnham, even ignoring the mystery transport, they would assume that getting him back was a necesary part of the mission, that Burnham had transported him off as a pretense in order to send the data with him, rather than instantly knowing he had betrayed her.

Gorgeiou as the big reveal doesn’t really matter for the viewer - we knew her all of what, 20 minutes? I guess it’s meant to be a shock to Burnham’s character more than the audience.
