Star Trek Discovery Episode 13 (Week of 1/28/18)

Watching it now. So far so good!

I really enjoyed this conclusion to the Mirror Universe arc. It was a little cliched in places but it was exciting and fun. I also knew exactly what was going to happen when they said they had jumped into the future but I didn’t care. It was a good episode. Two places where I did get surprised:

  1. When they killed the Mirror engineer so quick and easy.

  2. I thought for sure when Micheal handed them her phaser they had set it o over load or something.

Well, atleast they didn’t set the ship right down @ where they started from and have Burnham have to commit Mutiny a second time.

Cause atleast that would have been interesting.

I’ve forgotten a few details so without going back to rewatch…where is the Terran Burnham? She was off hunting the Terran Lorca yes? Would she have known he jumped universes? Did Federation Discovery swap places with Terran Discovery? If so is it still in the Federation universe? Federation Lorca is where? ( I only ask because I’m hoping Jason Isaacs is still around!)

Yeah, as I suspected, Isaac’s character is finished.

“The collapse of the mycelial network will destroy all life, everywhere, across the multiverse!”

Sigh.

Of course it will.

I think it’s fair to use that crutch here because it provides a good answer as to why we never see this technology used again. Plus they already established it crosses universes.

I stopped watching this episode when Burnham escaped from her escort in front of a whole swathe of the Emperor’s armed followers. Willing suspension of disbelief is fine but I thought the ‘with one bound Jack was free’ silliness went out in the 30s. I’ve been following the story since the start and some of it wasn’t bad, but for some reason this proved too much. I suddenly wondered why on earth I was wasting my time on this when there is still so much great stuff out there that I haven’t read or seen and my time to do so is vanishing with each passing day. Ephemera is great when you’re young, when you’re older you need to pick and choose more carefully lest you deprive yourself of a gem by spending time gazing at a turnip.

That’s just me though and I can see why others would appreciate this. Those opening titles are the best I’ve seen for any of the Star Treks.

That was definitely one (of many) narrow escapes in this episode - I’m at the point that I continue to watch because, well, I paid to watch this dreck and I am seeing it thru the bitter end.

Wait, its on Netflix.

I thought that was only if you were outside of the US?

Mirror Burnham’s shuttlecraft was destroyed as she chased Lorca.
We know that Mirror Lorca’s ship was destroyed as he tried an emergency transport, which is why he shifted universes.

In the real ST universe, Lorca’s ship, the Buran, was destroyed with all hands.
I, for one, am glad to finally have the first decent Star Trek since 1999.

A nitpick, but since when can two people transport tangled together but arrive on separate platforms in different positions?

When the stakes are too big, they become meaningless. It would have been enough to show the corruption having bad effects, and speculate on what it might cause in the future instead of straight up jumping into wiping out all life in all multiverses. Smaller stakes also leaves the possibility that they might not completely fix the problem, which means you’re not a 100% sure the main characters will succeed.

I liked the season overall, but this episode had some problems. It was hard to suspend disbelief after they dropped the multiverse wiping thing. Lorca was too interesting a character to waste simply on him turning into a wannabe dictator. It would have been more interesting if he was planning on using the corrupted spore technology to take over and reform the empire instead of simply replacing the emperor, and Michael had to oppose him to stop the spore corruption. I’m not a fan of the emperor joining the crew, either.

Thx

Losing Lorca in this episode was a pretty bold move, but didn’t they also lose the half-Klingon guy and Anthony Rapp’s lover too in the process? I don’t remember anybody rescuing them, especially after the one guy got his neck broken by half-Klingon guy.

Damm, that speech by Saru

I was just about to start screaming so say we all, after it was over.

Lorca said his followers were in the agony booths for 212 days of suffering. If that is true, how could they have survived it that long? Did they get it to go out for potty breaks? Food, drinks, sleep? Wouldn’t their hearts have given out after a while?

Worse, he said it was one year, 212 days.

I totally read somewhere that prisoners are sent to Mirror Risa every other week to recuperate so they can stand more torture.

Did you miss some episodes?

Tyler/Voq attacked Burnham while they were undercover on the Shenzhou in episode 11. He was “executed” by being beamed out into space, where the Discovery rescued him — presumably he’s still in the brig.

Culber died when he got his neck broken. As tends to happen.
