Star Trek Strange New Worlds trailer and now begins Streaming 2022/05/09

That’s because the universe is more close-knit and familial than Earth. If you were to bump into a random alien in outer space and ask, “oh, you’re from the Andromeda galaxy? Do you know Bob?” you are likely to get a reply like, “why, yes, I know good ol’ Alpheratz Bob, he’s my cousin. Small universe!”

Pike was referenced on DS9 as I recall.

Which is why no one ever lists The Alternative Factor as their favorite episode. Or pretty much not even acknowledges that it exists. They have forgotten it so much that they think Spock’s Brain is the worst episode.

Anti-matter universe! Sheesh.

Srsly tho, I always assumed it was kind of like international naval encounters during the Napoleonic Wars (which, wasn’t that whole Horatio Hornblower universe a key inspiration of Original Trek anyway?).

That is, the people at around commanding-officer level whom you meet at sea/in space are part of a fairly small and renowned subset of the vast hordes of strangers in their home country/planet. So it actually is a much more close-knit community than you’d expect from just considering its sheer geographical extent.

Somewhere in the Alpha quadrant there is a captain of a middle sized federation star ship fondly remembering when Kirk asked him to pass the salt…

“Oh, knock it off, Phil! Drop that hoary story, will you? We’ve all heard it a million times. Besides, did you know that the Almighty Ki-rok had a case of Andorran Crotch-Rot that even the transporter buffer couldn’t cure? True story. Heard it from a guy on the Trafalgar.”

There’s something a little “Hitchhiker’s Guide” to that.

In the Novels there is literally a Magic Bar where ship captains across time and space can mingle, shoot the breeze and get to know each other (akin to Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon). It’s a small universe

(I know i read that, years ago. Patrick O’Brian? )

Yup

I must say that I’m really surprised how much I like Pike and Chapel. A son Mount really gives life to the character. Jeffrey Hunter only got one episode to play that character so maybe it’s not fair to judge, but his portrayal really didn’t make Pike interesting.

Any bets on how high his pompadour will get?

And Jess Bush as Chapel never fails to make me smile. Not the same person as Majel Barrett’s character, clearly, but much more interesting. At least Majel got to play the highly entertaining Lwaxana Troi.

Spock is fine. Again, I think they chose well not to try and have him do a Nimoy impression.

Number One is also fine. But I am expecting more from her. I really want her to be a standout character. I’m thinking she isn’t getting a lot of meaty lines.

I like the grumpy engineer.

Nothing about the remaining characters stands out a lot. They need to give them more quiet moments. Like playing chess or hanging out in whatever the equivalent of Ten Forward or Quark’s is. Not always trying to be bad asses. (No stretching in front of mirrors in the workout room though, please).

Actually, there were two actors who played Pike in the original series; Jeffrey Hunter, and Sean Kenney (Pike in that weird box thing).

For certain loosely defined meanings of “portrayal.” More like a prop really.

Still. Different actor, same character. He could beep with the best of them.

I don’t know what the purpose of this nitpick is. Are you trying to get me to admit that Mount is better than both Hunter and Kenney? Okay, I’ll give you that. I would have thought the latter would be a trivial admission.

woosh

Easy there, Ascenray. Just a harmless observation. Only realized Pike was two actors recently myself. Hunter could have been good ghostbuster if they would have given him good ghostbuster job to do and said do it and be successful.

I think that would depend on if he ain’t ‘fraid of no ghost.

I’m liking the series quite a bit so far. I agree this is the most enjoyable Trek we’ve seen for many years. I’m convinced the episodic format is a key component to their success.

However, not everyone agrees. One reviewer at least felt it was apparently too much fanservice.

I REALLY don’t like the way they have to bring in sisters of, brothers of, great-granddaughters of, etc of previous characters. The Federation has over 150 planets, and yet everyone we meet has these ties to Kirk’s Enterprise. Small galaxy, I guess. I don’t need for a character to be Kirk’s father’s brother’s nephew’s cousin’s former roommate to want to watch them.

That said, I’ve learned to stop worrying and love Strange New Worlds. It’s so very enjoyable in almost every other way, I’m just letting it drop. Shit all over canon and continuity for all I care. I can’t stop them, and at least this time it’s for the benefit of a GOOD show.
