I grabbed a copy of the trailer to watch on my TV - on the “My father has it” line there is a subtle reverberation/echo effect that’s not on the rest of it that I didn’t pick up listening through headphones on my PC. Nice little touch.
I swear when Han and Chewie showed up, my inner 6 year-old who was awe-struck at Star Wars when it first came out, suddenly re-appeared and screamed "YESSSSS!!!'.
My guess would be magnets, roller bearings, and radio control to make the head “roam” separately over the body: it seems to stick pretty close. Nice effect, though, and good to see it done practically. Good trailer, too; I’m prepared to be disappointed, but it certainly hits all the fan sweet spots.
I wonder what the percentage chance this movie is awesome is. Knowing what we do about its creation, artists behind the scenes, how it has been made, and the brief footage we’ve seen, what would you say?
I’d put it like this:
50% chance it is awesome
30% chance it is really good, but not awesome
20% chance they blew it and it is only OK or bad.
I might be a little high on the “awesome” chance. I might flip the 50% and 30% chances around.
Bear in mind that it’s established within the first hour of the first movie that things move really slowly in the SW universe; the Republic stood for a thousand generations, and was defended by the Jedi for that entire time. It is implied the light saber has been around for millennia. This is a civilization working on a scale of time quite beyond the comprehension of an Earthling; that means they had an interstellar political organization that lasted four times longer than we on Earth have had recorded history at all. It’s equivalent to the Egyptian Old Kingdom conquering the entire world when it rose in 3100 BC, and remaining the world’s government from then until today, and then lasting about fifteen THOUSAND years.
The impression one gets of the SW universe is that it is a very exhausted, worn out civilization. There is little attention to art or beauty, everything is industrial, and it’s incessantly violent. We here on Earth have had periods where technology plateaued, and we’ve only really had technology at all for far less time than the SW universe has had light sabers.
Hmmm, I think actually the chance of “it will be really good but not awesome” is way too high. I think the percentages should be more like the below:
40% chance it will be awesome
10% chance it will be good, but not awesome
10% chance it will be just ok
10% chance it will be kinda bad
30% chance it will both suck and blow
This morning I showed it to my 6 year-old son. He saw all the movies this summer (4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 6) so he hasn’t had to wait a decade for another, but he was excited.
I never thought I would get to take my kids to see a Star Wars movie in the theatre.
I was looking for exactly this since it came out (instead of just ubernerds talking about it in front of webcams!) Here’s one. They do indeed ‘lose it!’
