People have also pointed out two suns and a moisture thingy in the ground. Jakku is the name of the planet, but is it just Tatooine with a different name?
It’s a poster. (An official poster, even.) But it’s not the poster. Which is good, because it looks like it belongs on the cover of a spinoff novel, not a movie theater.
Yeah, I think there will be another more official poster later. A theatrical release one.
I was not a fan of Jurassic World, but the script was bad. He may do better with a good script.
Side news (that everyone following this thread should love)
Disney announces creation of ‘Star Wars’ theme parks!
They didn’t say when they would open, which has me all nervouscited because we’re planning a trip to DW in Feb 2017. Can they build it that fast?! May the Force be with them!
He also had a screeenwriter credit on that one…
They aren’t breaking ground in Disneyland until 2017. No idea for WDW.
Given the Alligators near Orlando, they should have optioned Jurassic Park, & “hired local talent”.
Yes, so I’m hoping he doesn’t write the Star Wars movie.
Rian Johnson is apparently writing the treatment for Episode IX, so that’s covered at least.
They should let the folks at Pixar write the script.
I hope Lawrence Kasdan is helping anyone. Having a write be present for all 3 main movies would be great and I pretty much trust Kasdan with Star Wars. I like both Empire and Jedi, so he seems pretty good.
Yes, Kasdan and Alan Dean Foster ought to both weigh in. They know their SW.
Kasdan was in story meetings where they mapped out the entire trilogy, so his fingerprints will be on Episodes VII-IX. (Of course, he’s co-writing VII and the Han Solo spinoff as well). Foster, meanwhile, has written the novelisation for VII, just like the good ol’ days.
Drew Struzan has seen half the movie and read the entire script.
Then again, who knows what he would have said about the Phantom Menace. I read the original script for that movie back before it came out and I thought it was quite good on paper(it was very different than the final movie we got). However, Struzan also says he’s seen half the movie.
Anyway, neat.
Yes, and encouraging. Thanks.
From what I understand, you’re right. I read the recent book How Star Wars Conquered The Universe, which gave a rundown of the earlier draft. Jar Jar was still a bit buffoonish, but he spoke perfect English, and added to Padme’s plea to Boss Nass in an articulate way: “I have traveled far. I have seen many wonders. We must become a part of the universe. In isolation, we will die.” Anakin was older–about fourteen or fifteen. Obi-Wan was much more involved in the plot, being the only one on the mission. Qui-Gon didn’t enter the picture until they returned to Coruscant. Anakin uses his Force abilities to help the group through the blockade when they go back to Naboo, and Padme is his gunner when he pilots the craft to destroy the spacecraft.
Maybe it wasn’t perfect as-is, but it probably would have made a better Ep I than we got.
The script I read was far closer to the shooting script than what you describe and I remember none of what you mentioned. Anakin was a kid, but he was kind of like Aliya in Dune in the sense he spoke like an adult. He was wise and intelligent way beyond his years, though melancholy.
Jar-Jar spoke the same, but you didn’t hear that ridiculous voice Lucas decided Best should use. If you take the voice out, it is way less dumb. It’s still stupid, but nowhere near as stupid. Remember, Best gave Lucas a ton of choices for voices and Lucas chose the dumbest one.
Aside from this, the script was a lot longer. What we see when we watch the Phantom Menace is a 2 hour 50 minute movie sliced down to 2 hours and 10(by the time the credits roll). It’s so badly directed, a director’s extended cut could not save it.
I think if Lucas had written the script and handed it off to a competent director, it may have turned out to be a decent movie. If the director had some freedom to edit the script a bit as he went, it could have been great.
Instead, we got a total mess that revealed how incompetent Lucas had become.
I will try to locate that script, but I don’t know if I can.
