The most recent soliid rumour I’ve heard is that following Clone Wars S2 and S3, a live-action TV series set in the post-Jedi Star Wars universe may come to pass. That would be good to see, if only because it would be a genre show that even the most dumbfuck executive wouldn’t have the stones to axe.
Search your feelings - you know it to be true.
I’m not afraid they’ll axe it. I’m afraid they’ll fuck it up. How often does a movie or movie franchise lead to a TV series that isn’t a total abortion and an obscene abomination of desolation? The only example that comes readily to mind is Buffy, and I’m very much afraid that was a fluke.
WRT the above, I’m thinking specifically of the Logan’s Run TV series, the Planet of the Apes TV series (both prime-time live-action and Saturday-morning animated), and every made-for-TV Star Wars show I’ve ever seen, live or animated.
There were also very short-lived and forgettable sitcoms based on the films What’s Up, Doc? and Party Girl and . . . I can’t go on.
But of course! At the time Lucas first made Star Wars, the special effects technology wasn’t sophisticated enough to show Greedo firing first.
The Clone Wars cartoons, which I think are better than both prequels combined, come to mind.
Oh, come on, it could easily be done as a series of holiday specials.
It’s never wise to underestimate dumbfuck TV executives.
Highlander? Stargate? MAS*H? Alien Nation?
MASH* was a classic, I admit. Highlander had its moments. Stargate and Alien Nation rate an “eh.”
Stargate SG-1 is the Sci-Fi channel’s top-rated show, and has done something like 7 seasons. It’s more than just “eh.”
That something like “Disco’s greatest hits”?
I will admit, however, that Stargate (like Buffy) presents a rare example of a movie-based TV series being a noticeable improvement over the movie it’s based on.
Not that that’s setting the bar very high, in this case.
I have to concede that. The original movie Stargate was pretty boring. If I wasn’t already a fan of the series, I would have lost interest in the movie about half-way through.
