Star Wars: The Old Republic for Preorder!

Kreia is the character I had in mind when I was trying to consider a “good” Sith, as opposed to an “evil” one. An “evil” one would be the dude sucking the life out of planets. (I never finished KOTOR II.)

She just sees the Force as a tool to use for whatever goals you may have.

Yoda spoke of the Force as something that surrounds us, and guides us.

Well…

KOTOR II spoilers:

Kreia actually hates the entire force and wishes to destroy it and wipe it from existence. She’s the last boss.

Holy Smokes!

To be even more perfectly fair
She is good in that she believes the universe would be legitimately better off that way. And preaches that users of the force should learn to not rely on it, but instead use their own abilities; relying only on the force as a supplement. She didn’t like the Jedi or the Sith, saying that they’ve become too dependent, and further teaching that gray was better than extreme light or dark.

She still wants to kill the force dead, however, that’s her ideal world.
I am guessing in SW:TOR MMO game terms, she would be lumped as Sith though, right?

You have no idea. She’s basically the same as Ravel Puzzlewell from Planescape. (The writer uses that character a few places. More or less on purpose. Anywhere Chris Avellone has writing duties and tosses an old, blind lady in, it’s her. ) She is evil.

All the stories you heard about Ravel Puzzlewell prepared you for a loathsome monster who would devour your soul. If she intended that, though, she chose a strange way to go about it - she is undeniably insane, trapped in a black-barbed maze of thorns and evil. You can’t help but pity her, despite her great power: She has lost everything and doesn’t even know it.

aaaand yes.

Her name is Darth Traya. She is Betrayal. Almost nothing she says to you through the entire game is true. She’s basically Obi-Wan. “From a certain point of view.”

It may be too late for those who are hoping to get in that first 50k or whatever will sorta-promise to get in early, but my sweetie surprised me with a CE pre-order last night. From Amazon. So keep trying

Also, I do hope some folk from here guild together. I enjoyed Galaxies, but when it released, it was quite definitely a grouping-mode game; even crafting required grouping or guilding, for the most part. I had fun with my friends, but once they quit, it wasn’t much fun soloing. (Until the whole evisceration of the skill tree, and everyone on the planets left, and when I came back I had a whole guild hall to myself to fill with…clothing! That was fun)

Anyhoo…looking forward to it! PvP should be fun. I loved how it worked in Galaxies; my little jedi is still kos in at least a couple of cities; always fun trying to sneak through to catch a shuttle!

But that doesn’t make any sense.

In the words of Obi-Wan:

“The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It’s an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us, and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together.”

Seems to me the only way to get rid of the force is to destroy all living things in the universe. Is this addressed in the game?

Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid.

I suggest the use of a very good blaster…

Anyone thought about what character they will roll first? The Bounty Hunter looks interesting, AoE carbonite spray could be useful.

I am just now looking around at things, but…I’m not a meta-gamer at all. The Sith Warrior looks like fun, and I love the idea of playing the race that uses only the Force to see with. Bounty Hunter/Smuggler always look cool. I’ll probably try 8 before settling on one. Or two. Or…three…

On the the SWTOR boards, there’s a thread discussing what will happen if/when Bioware allows respecs. It sounds like it’s already a given, but we know how that goes. Most people are against being able to respec at will; no matter how much money it costs, people will find it and respec like mad. I’m in with those that things two respecs per character would be good: 1 to try something new without having to relevel, and 2 to change back if you decide you don’t like it. And they’re talking about full class respecs, not just points in a combat line or something. I hope they are still just thinking about it, and settle on twice. It seems a good compromise.

I like the system that there is in some other MMORPGs; have a couple of different set specs. So, for example, if you’re running around playing by yourself, you can have one set up; when you’re running an instance, you can switch to your other spec, which sets you up more for healing, or damage, or tanking, or whatever.

Agreed. It sounds like there will be various ways to take your starting class; it’d be nice to switch those around when you need them for sure.

My friend who I play wow with wants to be a Jedi so looks like that will be the first class for me, I’ll have a Bounty Hunter alt probably.

Why does it bother you if there are unlimited respecs?

As much as RPG purists loathe them, infinite respecs are healthier for the long-term survival of the game. I don’t care how compelling the gameplay is, nobody wants to grind another toon to max level because they made a few mistakes in their spec, or simply because they changed their mind, or because the continuous class balance tweaks by the devs changed the entire feel of the character. It’s fine to limit it by making it prohibitively expensive, but to lock a player into a spec forever is incredibly poor MMOG design, as well as an idiotic business decision. This ain’t KOTOR anymore.

Not only that, but it’s healthier to allow those cross-advanced class respecs, because otherwise you’ll end up with the scenario where everyone ends up DPS (or whatever) and then to get a tank you have to get another character up to max, as well as gear them. It’s hard enough getting two sets of gear for one character, much less getting two sets of gear AND leveling twice.

I can understand if the advanced classes have a different storyline completely, but I still think it would be healthier to find a way (hell, a max level character could blow through lower level mission, so you could even make them do the rest of the story quests for the other side at max level) to allow ways to shift into another role.

And I don’t care how balanced they make it, it’ll probably be a pain to level at least one role/class, it sucks to have to level one way in order to ultimately fulfill that role, when leveling in an easier role and then switching is much more fun and sane. It does cause the issue of “not knowing how to play that role” but I’m not sure the alternative on simply not having enough people fulfilling it, period, is much better than having to suffer the few sucky ones (especially since the sucky ones can learn to play).

Yep I think this is one area where gameplay should trump all other concerns. From reports levelling is quite slow, comparable to vanilla wow, so I would expect most players to only have one max level toon for quite a long time. Being able to switch roles (at a cost of course, a good money sink if nothing else) to suit your guild or aims should be possible.

I watched a couple gameplay videos on Youtube. They showed a party of four going through a couple missions.

I hope there is plenty of soloable PvE content.

In WoW, and LoTRo, a player can get to max level solely on solo content. You can’t do quests designed for groups, obviously, but there is plenty of content available to waste many months leveling and crafting.

Don’t forget your companions, even without other players you’ll never be alone.

Plus I read somewhere (might have been comic con coverage, damn brain not being a help here) that there will be a whole planet dedicated to solo end game play.

ETA: From an interview with the Director of Production:
Can you explain what you meant when you stated “we have an entire world that is devoted to the elder game for players who are not grouped up?” What can the solo endgame player expect?

We have an endgame planet that is very much something you go to after you’ve completed your class quest. We wanted to make sure we’re supporting both the endgame players who are very much into Operations, Flashpoints, and PvP, but also those people who like to play in a more solo way. So there is content on that planet that is specifically for the people who like to play solo. You can play it as a group, but you can have something that is fun to do as a solo player.
