Star Wars:Zero Company

Anyone else playing?

I am and i really having a blast. I had forgotten that it was coming, and had independently got a jonesing for Xcom, however since 3 has not even been confirmed as being considered :frowning: , I started to look for similar last week. and re-found Zero Company. I almost never buy at release these days, but after release a couple days ago I saw very positive reviews from places I trust. So I bit the bullet and am not disappointed at all. There are only 4 rather that 6 on a mission which does feel restrictive, and less flexibility that I would prefer, but the balance seems well calculated. At least as much a Xcom, which always had some combos more powerful than others. And the Star Warsness feels well integrated and natural, as opposed to some Star Wars games where they feel like they just made the game they wanted, then slapped on a flimsy skin to fill the brief.

Ohh, and I guess for people not familiar: Xcom type games are turn-based isometric strategy games where you move a small squad through a designed, or procedural level, using weapons and skills to meet the goals of the mission. Mostly killing sneaky bastards and trying to keep your team safe.

I will be now.

This game has taken up all my free time since launch. A few tips: credits are your main bottleneck, you are always going to be short. Your best source of power scaling is the bond system, a single bond level is as good as any upgrade you can buy. Great story, great cast, great gameplay. My only complaints are minor balance issues that i imagine will be fixed or modded eventually and the lack of a “free play” mode were you can keep doing missions after the story is done.

Well this is kind of a bummer.

XCOM Enemy Within is probably my all time favorite video game, all things considered, so I’ll probably have to check this out eventually.

The game is also published by Electronic Arts, which recently finalized its sale to Saudi Arabia and the Trump family.

The devs are just disposable cogs in this big, cynical money machine =/ That’s just the AAA games industry these days, with a few exceptions.

I am and I love it. I am a HUGE X-Com fan and that game almost never leaves my computer.

While this is certainly similar to X-Com 2 in many ways it is different enough with enough of its own ideas and mechanics that I am having a blast. Also, Star Wars universe is just fun to play in so that helps a lot. I still love X-Com and X-Com 2. This does not replace them, it sits alongside them.

Of course, if you hated X-Com 2 chances are you will not like this either. It is the same style of game at the root of it all.

I highly recommend it!

This is a fun game so far. I am only 3 or 4 missions in. I loved all the XCom games.

Not bitching but so far the missions and the battlefield maps seem fairly similar. Hopefully there will be more variety later.

The levels are all handcrafted, not procedural like X-Com 2.

I’ve been playing, it’s not bad but so far it’s no X-Com.
I hope there are missions with environments that are not “walls and boxes”, for example, something like woods, swamps, mountains.
Also I hope there are bigger levels, so far (about 8 missions) they are all small.
And that annoying “advantage points” mechanic is idiotic, so my soldier has a missile launcher but for some reason cannot use it until we have killed some enemy troopers? WHY?.

I like the advantage points for a different “battle currency” to spend to give an extra layer to the tactics. Although I did have some trouble in the early game using it thanks to the RNG at the recruitment station just not making available the class that blows everybody away at building advantage points.

You can change everything about the random recruits, including their classes, the passive trait and all their looks down to race. The ten personalities they have for the random recruits are also surprisingly complete, they don’t feel like NPCs, the only real difference between them and the story based companions is they don’t get their own quest lines. Just beat the game for the first time on hard difficulty, easily GOY for me.

Yeah. I just didn’t even know that class existed, until I went to respec one of the recruits.

I gotta say the story is actually pretty good.I am not done with the game yet but, so far, I really like the story. For me that counts for a lot.

How far along are you? the way some events happen blew me away.

Not very far along yet. Work week but holiday weekend ahead so I might get some more time there to play the game (I hope…and I do have friends so time with them too).

Somehow X-Com managed to be better without that extra layer…
But ignore me, I’m just an old curmudgeon who prefers his games more in the “simulation” side.
Besides that, I generally like the game, even if I don’t have much time to play it currently.
For those who played it to the end, do different scenarios appear? or is it always “Boxes and platforms”?

There are some missions in Umbara, which looks like a weird plant planet. Some inside space ships.

Cool!, thanks.
