Starbucks' Gingersnap latte not as good as last year

Of course, last year it was gingerBREAD latte, and had a much smoother taste. Just me or has anyone else noticed the difference?

And what the heck are those little solid pieces in the bottom of the cup that make you thing you’ve accidentally swallowed a grub?

I haven’t tried it; the new name scared me (I don’t like change), so it’s good to hear that my fears are, for maybe the first time, justified.

You could always switch over to the Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate, which is so good, it should be a federally controlled substance.

I tried one yesterday and got those things too. At first I thought it was coconut?
When I mentioned it to my wife and said it was a gingersnap latte she said matter of factly “Maybe it’s dehydrated ginger?” :smack:
I have no idea why that didn’t occur to me.

Yeah my wife had to clued me in to that as well. I just think it is bad form to put a “surprise” at the bottom of a cup of coffee. Especially if the surprise somewhat resembles a booger. :frowning:

That does sound good.

Drinking a cup right now, based on your recommendation. I have to agree; it’s scary good. So, thanks.

Were the pieces really at the bottom? I got one the other day (and I didn’t like it either), but I thought those were the little pieces of candied ginger that were on top of the whipped cream that I carefully avoided while drinking.

Oh, maybe that is where they put them – that would make sense. But slap a lid on it, and hand it out the drive thru and you end up with boogers in the bottom of the cup.

Well, they ended up at the bottom of my cup, too, so it doesn’t make much of a difference in the end.

Mr. Gazer, who’s worked at Starbucks for 7 years now, says the candied ginger goes on the whipped cream, but some of it is supposed to sink down to the bottom. He thinks it’s a dumb idea, too, but he says you can ask for it to be left off or replaced with nutmeg or something. He also says that, otherwise, the drink is the same as the Gingerbread Latte was last year. It uses the same syrup and everything. Apparently it’s the candied ginger that gives it the “snap.”

Or something.

Wow, that’s hard to believe. But I’ll give it a try and ask to leave it off an see how that goes. I’ll report back tomorrow.

Nah, they’ve changed something. I tried one this morning and asked them to hold the candied ginger, which they did, and it still just isn’t as good. This years’ recipe isn’t as sweet, and there is a flavor missing. Last year it tasted “fuller.” There was something that you picked up on with the back half of your tongue. I’ve had three from three different stores, and I think I’m done. Sad, because it was sooo good last year.

Had a sip of that this morning as well. That is pretty tasty stuff.

Have you tried the Toasted Marshmallow Latte?

That’s some good stuff.

I had one of these this morning as well. Heavenly. Tasted just like a chocolate covered pretzel.

Another report from Mr. Gazer: if you only go to Starbucks for the Gingerbread/snap latte, you may not know that the default milk has changed from whole milk to 2%. And I know from experience that that makes a BIG difference in how drinks taste! So you might want to give it one more try, and ask for whole milk instead of 2%.

Also, you (rainy) seemed surprised that you’d be able to ask for your latte without the candied ginger, and I thought you should know that Starbucks is all about customization. If you want a half-caf half-decaf latte with one pump of vanilla and 2 pumps of gingerbread and 3 Splendas and half soy milk and half whole milk, with foam and whipped cream (or whatever), you can get it – just ask. That’s an especially high-maintenance drink, but the baristas will make it for you and they aren’t supposed to give you crap about your foo-foo PITA drink.

Hell, I barely speak enough ‘starbuckian’ to order something straight off the menu. I usually just grunt and point.

I still miss the chantico. Bastids.

In my experience, they’re always awesome at working with you to make what you want. I always ordered the gingerbread latte with nonfat milk and two pumps of gingerbread (otherwise it was too sweet), and they never gave me crap. That gag always annoyed me in movies, where the barista is supposed to argue with the customer, who’s fake annoyed at having to ask for a “venti” instead of a large. I would be shocked if that ever happened in real life.

Okay, I’ll try one again, and order it without the candied ginger. stargazer, tell Mr. Gazer thanks much for the inside info!
