Starcraft 2 replays

i didn’t know Starcraft replays could be funny! here’s a short 4 min youtube of a Grandmaster being cannon rushed - http://www.sc2-strategy.com/how-to-cannon-rush-a-starcraft-2-grandmaster-player/

Is it just me, or would the zerg player have been in pretty bad shape even if he had killed the pylons/probe? He had six or eight drones pulled off of resources to chase that probe, while the protoss player was presumably still putting almost full probes on resources. That’d be a huge economic advantage.

I Lol’ed

Yeah don’t know what the zerg player was thinking.

He was thinking that he was in trouble because he had only barely started a spawning pool by the time the probe had arrived. Pulling that many drones was the right choice by that point, the economic loss is offset by the expense on pylons by that point. The doom didn’t come until they all got stuck where only 3 could attack at one time, that was the real comedy

Well, if the drones had succeeded on their mission, it would have been only the cost of one pylon. By the time the second pylon went down, things were already looking pretty grim, and the third pylon sealed their fate.

What if he had just ignored the pylon (and presumed subsequent cannon) and instead concentrated on keeping spotters out of his base? The pylon was on low ground, so wouldn’t have been a threat by itself.

And he might have been doing this anyway (it’s hard for me to tell), but couldn’t he have used the mining no-clip effect to get more drones attacking the pylon at once?

Assuming the protoss gave up once the zerglings arrived, he still wouldn’t come out with an economic advantage because he’d rushed to forge and stockpiled rather than pump probes. He’d also suddenly get to deal with zerglings on a short run while having zero mobile units at all - aka, would have to cannon up his own ramp just to survive. He’d probably have just left the game if it didn’t work.

If you just cede the low ground, you’d get bottled up at the ramp, and zerg has virtually no options to break that siege at all, much less before something got vision up top, be it more pylons and cannons or a phoenix. Throwing spines down while racing to overlord sacs to drop on them would be the way I’d go at that point, but really, it shouldn’t have gotten that far to begin with. The drones were on course to finish that up handily when they got trapped, which seemed to be what the other guy was going for intentionally. A cute use of a map quirk.

For the mining order clipping…I have no idea! I don’t think SC2 is as forgiving as the original about that, but I have to admit that it’s not something I’ve poked at the edges of.

he didn’t have an army at that point, whether to kill the drone or to guard the ramp, he’s only choice was to kill the drone quickly or buy enough time for the lings to get out.

how does the mining clip thing work? if it’s just right-clicking on a distant mineral patch, then it doesn’t seem to work.

I was thinking of ordering all of the drones to mine the mineral right next to the pylon, then as soon as they started harvesting (all stacked on top of each other) ordering them to attack the pylon. I think, though I’m not certain, that he could have gotten all of the drones stacked on top of each other that way, and that they wouldn’t have spread out again until the pylon was dead.

i tried it. for a second, 5 or 6(?) out of 12 of them attacked the pylon, then dispersed back to where they were stuck, leaving 3 to continue attacking.

That was pretty funny. The zerg reacted really badly (pulled too many drones), then just get tricked. Pretty funny, I’ve never seen that before, although there’s a similar trick you can pull on Xel Naga Caverns where you can use three pylons to block off the area behind your opponents’ minerals then put cannons up back there, and there’s nothing they can do.

In the TSL3 last weekend, Cruncher (P) cannon rushed Mondragon (Z), so it can happen even at the pro level. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ond0TfDDX-E
