Stargate Atlantis Season 4 Premiere (9/28/07)

How many fellow Gaters are still on board in the wake of SG-1’s departure? Over the last three seasons, I’ve grown to prefer the chemistry of the Atlantis cast over SG-1, perhaps because the latter was really beginning to show its age. I think Claudia Black and Amanda Tapping made for the sexiest female duo on television though, and I’ll miss seeing Claudia but I’m excited to see Amanda coming over to the Atlantis team. In the interviews I’ve read, Tapping says that Carter will be undergoing some fundamental changes after being removed from her SG-1 comfort zone and being put in a leadership position. I didn’t want to see Tori Higginson take a hiatus from the show, but I’m looking forward to the playful friction between Carter and McKay now that they have to work with one another. Surely, the the two greatest minds of the Stargate universe will combine to give Atlantis a new edge.

ehhhh…I like Atlantis, but I’ve always been a bigger fan of SG-1. So I’m still recovering from it ending on such a “meh” note. I am glad to see that Amanda Tapping will be part of the cast, but I worry that it’s just pandering to the fan base and won’t be given a reasonable explination that works.

Carter isn’t onboard just yet; they’re not trying to rush her into the show right away and I don’t think they’re just pandering to the fans without an explanation. There’s traditionally been quite a bit of crossover between the two series, so I don’t consider it much of a stretch that she’ll be taking the place of Weir this season. I like that Atlantis is better written from a technical standpoint than SG-1 and that they’re almost always encountering unforeseen circumstances. It continues to give the show the feeling that this is still an expedition and they are still very vulnerable and low on resources. The Replicator plot continues to thicken unlike the Goa’uld or Ori storyline; the Replicators simply refuse to die because they’re always evolving and adapting. They’re like what the Borg should have been in concept. I think it was a pretty tight episode. Too much to fit into one hour, and if I’m not mistaken, apparently the first three-part Stargate episode.

On the other hand, it appears there aren’t any Gaters here besides Atrael, so maybe I’m just talking to hear myself speak … ?

I watched it. I’ve always been a bigger SG1 fan, but I will still watch it.

When did the cute Serenity girl join the show?

Jewel Staite began filling Paul McGillion’s shoes as the head doctor after his character Carson Beckett was killed off at the end of Season 3. She’s actually been on the show before, though as a different character. She played a young orphan Wraith in an episode last year, but you’d never realize it was her with all the makeup!

She’s alright, but I miss Beckett. And now Weir. They’re dropping like flies. :frowning:

I’m surprised OpalCat didn’t chime in here. As I recall she’s a Stargate fan as well.

I actually liked the episode. After a big letdown with the Heros season premier, I was glad to see that everything wasn’t resolved from the cliff-hanger in the first 5 minutes. I like the fact that not only did the continue to struggle with the issues left after the season closer, they actually didn’t even wrap them up in one show. Granted I don’t want every episode to be a “To Be Continued” one, but I liked the change from most season premiers.
