Well, from the movie, all you really need to know that you missed from the series would be that Abydos was actually a lot closer to home, and it took them two series to regularly be able to do what was already done in the movie, i.e. jump to a far off galaxy.
And, I don’t know if it’ll be relevant to the new series, but the Go’auld (like Ra) are not quasi-huminoid dinosaurs as suggested in the movie, but small, snake-like creatures that inhabit human bodies and take over their minds. They still were the source for all Egyptian myths, though.
Oh, and the Ancients are the stargate builders. The rest of their identity is a bit of a spoiler for the first series, so…They’re the previous evolution of man, and look just like us. They were so technologically advanced, they moved on to another galaxy, using their stargates as a quick trip home. They and the Goa’uld are the reason humans exist on so many other earth-like planets.Well, I guess it’s not a spoiler to tell you that many of these guys “ascended”, i.e. shed their mortal coil, and became beings of pure energy. This becomes important towards the end of the first series (Stargate SG-1).
Oh, and if you’re curious, the second series (Stargate: Atlantis) starts with the humans using ancient technology to superpower the stargate, allowing humans to go to the mythical planet of Atlantis. The humans continue to use the Ancient technology left at the Atlantis stargate to stay alive, and fight off some of a life-stealing pseudovampiric race called the Wraith.
Yeah. that about covers anything that I can think of that wouldn’t be a spoiler of some sort. If this is anything like Atlantis, some of this history/backstory is gonna get referenced eventually.
Now that I think about it, what about the Supergates? I don’t remember all of them being destroyed. They ought to be able to get some technology out of the Priors. Use a wormhole drive to get from galaxy to galaxy, put a Supergate on each side, and then it’s just a question of how quickly you can get point-to-point in each galaxy.
I have seen random episodes of SG1 and SGA, but the basic technology from the movie is all I know about. Oh, yeah, they built spacecraft and Charles Tucker III was a wraith.
The people on the ship seemed to think it was slowing them down so they could possibly evacuate from the failing ship to one of the habitable planets in the system.
Hmmm… I thought it had already slowed down (ran out of power), and needed a boost from the gas giant to get to the other side of the solar system where the habitable planets were.
Well, yeah, via dropping out of FTL, and adrift due to the lack of power. The rate of drift was whatever the speed of an Ancient ship is when it drops out of FTL, until it hit something to alter its speed. Hitting the gas in the giant and the resulting turbulence should’ve had a slowing effect.
