Stargirl

I had assumed LFJ would play Grundy…

My WAG was that he’s Shazam (the wizard who gave Captain Marvel his powers). But, yeah, a surviving former member of the JSA makes more sense.

I wonder how Doctor Mid-Nite’s powers work in combat - if it was something like “God-Mode” in “Person of Interest” (always knowing exactly where to punch, to throw, to move, etc.) it could be pretty effective.

It’s interesting that Doctor Mid-Nite’s goggles (“Chuck”, right?) makes holograms that are glowing green, because that would seem to thematically step on Green Lantern’s toes. As an FX artist, I would’ve nixed this decision if they were eventually going to have a Green Lantern character later on.

That’s a good point. On the other hand, all of the publicity stills and clips I’ve seen showed the characters we already have: Stargirl, S.T.R.I.P.E.S., Wildcat, Dr. Mid-Nite, and Hourman. I think that’s all of the JSA: The New Generation they’re planning on having, at least to start with.

But, yeah, down the road, even if they only have the character on for one special guest episode, it probably would have been better to give them a different color scheme. Stargirl is already yellow-white energy. Dr. Fate is traditionally yellow-gold energy. Johnny Thunder/The Thunderbolt/Cei-U is pink energy. A nice Tron-blue would have probably been a better choice. Also, although Dr. Mid-Nite does have green elements in the costume, blue seems more thematic than green.

Thoughts:

  1. The janitor said something about “There are dragons in the waters.” That might be a warning about the Dragon King.
  2. It’s possible mean girl will be “Queen Bee”, but isn’t she the one who warned Courtney “You’ll never see me coming”? They’ve already referenced “Shade” as someone who had “betrayed” the ISA. Shade, in the comics, could teleport and also manipulate shadows. So maybe she’s connected to him.
  3. Stargirl has the Green Lantern, but not the ring. Wonder if a child of Green Lantern already has the ring, maybe not knowing what it is.

I’m not up on the Super Hero lore, but I thought Solomon Grundy was powerful enough to be a Superman foe. Am I incorrect? He seems like too much for the junior league.

Originally, Grundy was originally a villain of the original Green Lantern. You’re right, the “new” JSA is way out of their league  at the moment, especially with “Brainwave, Jr.” gaining his powers, based on what we just saw last episode.

She should rename herself Google gLass (the third “g” is silent.)
Also, the new villain? Violinda.

Solomon Grundy’s power level has varied wildly over the decades, from mildly superhuman zombie-strength, to being able to go toe-to-toe with Superman, and everywhere in between. His intellect has also varied considerably, and he’s displayed other abilities in some depictions and not others.

At some point, I think there was an in-universe retcon that he frequently “dies”, then re-emerges from the magic swamp, and every time he does he’s “reset”. Whenever he re-boots this way, his strength and power levels, intellect, and other abilities come out differently.

This show’s Grundy seems to be nearer the lower end of the power scale - he’s strong enough to knock a speeding SUV off the road, but not strong enough to break out of the reinforced cell he’s in. Of course, the cell could be magical, or just for show. Still, on a TV budget, he’s probably going to be throwing cars around, not locomotives, or mountains.

Still really happy with the music. Last night had “Wonderful” and “People are Strange,” which is overused but still fun to hear.

It would just about have to be. It was also after a run-in with Mean Girl. She appears to be of Asian ancestry - I’m assuming she’s going to turn out to be Dragon King’s daughter.

Could be. As I stated above, I think she’s the Dragon King’s daughter, but she could also have a connection to Shade. The camera definitely gave a specific close-up to the bee jewelry, though. That’d be a pretty weird mis-direct if she’s not Queen Bee (or maybe Bumblebee?).

As to Shade having betrayed the ISA, maybe he’s the janitor? Brainwave might have scrambled his brains, and putting him to work as the janitor at their children’s school seems like an ironic punishment.

Seems like a good possibility.

She’s already Principal Bowin’

How long does a Golden Age power ring stay powered between chargings at the Lantern, by the way?

Golden Age Green Lantern typically began each story by charging his ring. It apparently lasted one day, regardless of usage.

So the ring in “Stargirl” is long-since discharged, since the Lantern has been gathering dust for nearly a decade.

To be fair, part of why Grundy was such a tough customer for Green Lantern was that veggie-based stuff — in this case, ‘swamp muck’ — is the exception to the rule when it comes to the magic ring: there’s no point in GL trying to zap the monster, or caging it with instant prison bars, or whatever; it maybe won’t even notice any of that as it rampages at the guy who suddenly can’t rely on his personal forcefield.

By contrast, it’s possible that Stargirl can just blast it to pieces.

That’s right - that was the version of GL vulnerable to a baseball bat (wooden).

LOL. Sportsmaster was also originally a Golden Age Green Lantern villain, too.

Say, you think the bratty younger brother finds the pen and accidentally says the magic words to bring out the Thunderbolt?

I think it seems likely. What say you?
