Stargirl Season 3 "Frenemies"

Stargirl returns on August 31 for its third season.

Artemis Crock and family have moved in next door. Cindy Burman has (maybe) reformed. OG-Starman has come back to give Courtney some much-needed training. Things are going to be really interesting.

Any word on how many episodes this season?

According to certain episode listings, there will be 13.

S03E01 Chapter One: The Murder

Some additional featurettes in advance of the season premiere:

And the episode synopsis:

STARMAN IS BACK - With Starman (Joel McHale) back from the dead and her former super-villain enemies vowing to reform, Courtney (Brec Bassinger) is hopeful that there will finally be peace in Blue Valley. But when The Gambler (guest star Eric Goins) arrives to town looking to make his own amends, the team find themselves at odds over whether he can be trusted.

Haven’t watched any of this show but it looks fun. Is it pretty entertaining for all, or is it aimed squarely at a younger demographic?

Last season’s Big Bad was pretty scary (in the psychological sense) and there are some deaths, so I wouldn’t say it’s aimed at a young demographic, though the protagonists are supposed to be in high school. It’s a step up from the usual CW fare.

Despite being about teens, it is oddly enough less angsty then most of the Arrowverse shows.
It is a bit lighter in tone like the first few years of Flash.

It is.

One scene I always quote to people is right at the beginning when the parents move their urban teens back to Farmtown, USA. As soon as they get out of the truck, someone says Hi! to the dad. “Who was that?” asks his daughter. “I dunno.” “That man said hi to you! You must know him.” “Nope.” “Wait, what? Y’mean, people just say hello to strangers for no reason? [sotto voce] Oh, I’m going to love this place…”

It’s probably because of me eatching Community but everything Joel McHale says seems sarcastic to me - which is just wrong since the character is supposed to be almost as earnest and sincere as Courtney and Stripesy.

So I think I’ve figured out who was spying on everyone (and probably killed the Gambler, or at least was present when he died):

A member of Helix called Kritter. He’s a mutant who looks like a dog (hence the growl we heard) and a hacker. I read about him in the 1980’s comics.

The was a fun opening. One of the few Neil Diamond songs I actually like as a bonus.

I hate the Gambler character and was really annoyed they brought him back. Just a weak and annoying villain. But with any luck he is gone now.

Overall a good start to the season.

That opening was a real banger, wasn’t it? And it got us up quickly up to speed with almost everything that’s been happening in the hiatus.

I haven’t watched a lot of Community. Almost none, in fact. I know Joel McHale mostly from Talk Soup, where as a host I think he had the same attitude as his character in Community. But I appreciated his dramatic acting chops here and didn’t doubt Sylvester’s sincerity.

Are we thinking that the Gambler was sincere about finding his daughter? Who is Becky anyway? Is she someone we’ve encountered before? It better have something to do with that weird asylum from last season.

The writers were signaling he was sincere with the letter and dropping his silly little gun into the trash which is when I realized he would be dead shortly.

Re the Gambler’s daughter… Helix had three members who might be Becky. Tao Jones, Penny Dreadful, and Baby Boom. I’m guessing it’s one of the three, and probably the last.

My wife and daughter watch Community constantly. The other day I said to them, “You’re not going to believe this, but I just watched an entire episode of a show in which Joel McHale was 100 per cent sincere without an ounce of snark.” So agree to disagree?

Honestly, I didn’t know he had it in him.

It’s definitely not him- it’s me. I’ll get over it

Yeah, I think the Gambler really was trying to turn over a new leaf. Who else among the numerous villains in the previous seasons do we think have truly reformed (or trying to, at least)?

  • Cindy Burman - I’ll put her into the “trying” category
  • Artemis Crock - I think she really wants to join the JSA. Whether she’s reformed is up in the air.
  • Sportsmaster and Tigress - The most supportive parents in Blue Valley. If their daughter wants it, they want it. Have they reformed? :man_shrugging:
  • The Shade - They haven’t given us much to go on so far. He was pretty helpful last season.
  • Cameron (Iceman Jr) - He didn’t have any villainous tendencies, but maybe he’s been influenced by his grandparents.

I forget who is left, as almost everyone else is dead. I think the Fiddler might be still be out there somewhere.

Artemis wants to be in the JSA because she wants to belong to a winning team. Her parents want her to be on a winning team, too. I wouldn’t call that “reformed”.

Solomon Grundy–does he count as reformed? He is definitely a friend to Hourman. I’m sure he’s not dead. He’ll pop up when it’s convenient. (Which might be a surprise to Shade.)

Off topic: The Wizard’s wand is still out there somewhere, right? It hasn’t been destroyed? I think a new Wizard will be the fourth season’s Big Bad, if there is a fourth season.

S03E02 Chapter Two: The Suspects

A MURDER MYSTERY IN BLUE VALLEY - After stumbling upon a suspicious murder in Blue Valley, the JSA begin looking at potential suspects. A tense run-in with The Shade (guest star Jonathan Cake) makes Courtney and Pat realize that Sylvester’s old ways could land them in hot water. Finally, Barbara steps in to help Paula, whose attempt at fitting in has not gone so well.

I thought they were setting up Cameron to have killed the Gambler, but it’s looking like Cindy really did it. It doesn’t make sense. What could her motive possibly be?

Sylvester has a real mean streak, doesn’t he? I can’t imagine Courtney going all psycho on anyone like Sylvester did.
