Starship technology appears tomorrow. Do you go?

By Grapthar’s Hammer, why didn’t I think of that?

Hell yes. Even if I knew I wouldn’t make it back.

Don’t know what exactly they’d need me to do on a starship, though…oh! They’ve got a holodeck, right? Maybe I could be the resident holoprogram hack writer. Keep people from getting [del]stuck in a ru-[/del] bored with their [del]sick[/del] fantasies.

Or the ship ratcatcher. I could do ratcatcher.

I will be the Keeper of Cats. Every starship needs some cats around.

Yes

Scientist - planetology

Centauri. Then the already-discovered exoplanet systems in outwards order.

I’m in! You have a science mission, right? I want to explore some of those stars, supernovae, nebula, pulsars and all of those up close and personal. Enough with the remote sensing already! Plus, I can discover some really cool anomaly and have it named the Angua Anomaly.

Yes. No question. I would go even if there were no chance of ever coming back to Earth.

Something I already do and am good at, so probably something in medical/legal compliance or regulations management. Hey, maybe I’d be the author of the prime directive!

Proxima Centauri, to see a red dwarf up close and because it’s only 4 light years away, and then Alpha Centauri, to see if there’s really anything special about a binary system. Then it would be off to the first M Class planet we could find.

I’d take my wife if she wanted to go. If not, I’d go solo. Yeah, I’d miss her, terribly at first, but I’d be more resentful if I forwent a chance of a lifetime.

Where do I sign up?

Yes, in a heartbeat. I’ll await my assignment from Captain Oak. On edit, bartender in 10 Forward would be cool. I’m a pretty good bartender and can make pithy, wise sounding sayings as needed.

Hell yes. I’d go in a heartbeat. And Id like to be captain, if the jobs open. Ultimate control over the first contact humans will have with any alien specie, their first extra-solar manned ship, etc? Fuck yes. I’d have the ability to set the tone for human exploration for the next period, likely forcing humanity into (what I perceive as) beneficial social changes through social interaction with other races.

None of this “tell them where earth is” bullshit, my first priority is finding multiple extrasolar habitual worlds to ferry colonies to, in order to prevent any potential enemies we may meet from annihilating our entire race. Priority two, of course, is finding alien races and forging beneficial with them, exchanging cultural, economic and scientific discoveries.

I’m there. No question. Graveyard shift helm? (Hey, I’m a sailor, I have some navigational skills.) Lunchtime relief engineering? Holodeck mopper? Guy who puts up railings on the walkways? I don’t care. I’m there.

I’d be there in a minute. I’ll take the wheel/levers/buttons/helm. Get to actually pilot the starship around, wherever Captain Oakminster directs? Take the ship to the next interesting phenomenon? And go faster than anyone in human history? Yes, Captain! Right away, Captain!

I’m in! Sign me up for exozoologist.

I’m in, in a heartbeat with my family. Ready for retraining with some useful basic skills at least to be a good tech.

I ain’t settin’ foot in no gosh-darned transporter, but other than that I’d totally be down. Sign me up for professional holophone player.
