So, I figured I might as well start this thread cause I didn’t see one elsewhere.
Anybody else watch the new Starship Troopers movie yet? It’s CGI-animated, does away with the camp and satire of the previous three films (yes, once again, the cartoon is deadly serious while the movies were silly satire). Everybody (except for Carl and Carmen) wear power armor now, and it seems to pick and choose elements from the book, movies, and cartoon.
I would say this is Starship Troopers as an anime, nevermind that there are already two other animes that fit that description (Blue Gender and, appropriately enough, an OAV called Starship Troopers, though I understand someone got sued for that one…)
It is certainly a vast improvement upon the ‘sequels’ to Verhoven’s 1997 piece. Darker, and without the hyperbole.
I was a little disappointed in the armour though. While it was definetly powered, it seemed to offer up just about the same level of protection as the stuff Casper and friends wore on their way to the grinder.
Yeah, we didn’t get a lot of chances to see the armor do any really impressive stuff. There was one bit where the two troopers took a running jump about 20 feet up in the air… and that was about it. One guy (the only Asian in the movie:smack:… in a movie made in Japan:D) tried to go hand-to-hand with the bugs, which only worked slightly better than you’d expect it to.
Kinda wish we got to see more of the Big 3 characters do anything, but I think they were only in this movie to keep some kind of continuity with the previous films. Carl as a sorta-villain was a fun change, but now I really wish they had kept NPH for the role.
