Start Trek: Enterprise - Bound [spoilers abound]

Mass is measured in kilograms, weight is a force and is measured in Newtons.

^:)^

This episode fellated with great allacrity.

That’s cause it was the decon chamber. Which made sense, the phermone thing and all, but they still managed to vex the guards anyway!

I thought it was an ok episode. It was summed up with that goofy ending. I immediately made the “boop-dada, boop-dada, booo…” sound like they always played on TOS whenever Kirk, Spock & McCoy made some cornball joke at the end.

Who else was thrilled at T’Pol and Tripp being bound?

Hmmm? Wh’a?

It was the decon chamber? because that was my 1st thought after they discovered pheremones were the problem. (also, they could have at least tried re-adjusting air filters) Maybe the gaurds should have been wearing spacesuits.
And why didn’t Trip and / or T’pol stun the Orion babes?

Brian

next week looks like we get some Hoshi (or evil Hoshi) panda.

Let’s see: Archer invites aliens on board Enterprise. Aliens are allowed to wander around the ship unsupervised. Aliens take over ship. What a novel plot idea…

Naw, in the alternate universe she’ll probably be wearing a beard.

How long has it been since Berman/Braga last gave a damn?

This is a trick question, right?

As in, “Did they ever?”

Oh, I don’t know. Considering how the network has treated the fans and the series so far, I imagine the decision went something like this:

Network Idiot #1: OK, we’ve decided to kill off Enterprise to make room for our next reality series: Network Executive Lobotomy: Who’ll know the difference? So what do you want to do with the last few episodes of Enterprise?

Marketing Idiot #1: We market the hell out of the last few episodes, acting like we love the show but it’s being cancelled by some power beyond our control.

Network Idiot #1: In other news: Bear Deficates in Woods! No, I mean for the last storylines. We all know that this season there was positive response from the fans when we concentrated on character, conflict, and storytelling. With that in mind, what direction do we want to go to finish off this thing?

Netowrk Idiot #2: T & A

Network Idiot #3: T & A

Network Idiot #4: T & A

Network Idiot #5: How about, as a reward for the hardcore fans who have stayed with us throughout the series, we find a way to send the series out with style - the hell with gratuitous sex and mindless action, let’s just tell the best story we can about the founding of the Federation!

(Stunned silence. Crickets chirp.)

Network Idiot #5: C’mon you guys, I’m kidding! I say we go out with guest stars shoehorned into the story, self-conscious references to previous series and… (dramatic pause) T & A!

Network Idiot #1: OK, it’s unanimous then.

Question for those obsessed / in love with Hoshi: Is the idea of MU “bad Hoshi” more or less appealing than “good Hoshi” ? In other words, is the nice nature of the character part of her appeal, or is it entirely based on her hotness?

And where is Aesiron? You’d think his radar would be going off with the Hoshi-Panda talk.

Save Ebterprise officially admits defeat, btw. Refunds are coming to contributors.

Coto says he was mostly sure when he took the job that this was the last season. So, it wasn’t really like they thought they had a chance to go on and delve deep into stuff. They did the eps they really wanted to do. Mirror Uni, Orion gilrs, and some sort of Shatner vehicle were high on their wish list. They got to do two of those.

If the series had been able to continue, Coto had indicated that he really wanted to do some special stuff with the founding of the Federation and some other things. Funny thing, tho. I can’t anything where he talkd about the Romulan War other than in passing. Manny was pretty good overall, but he sure wasn’t the savior he was made out to be by so many off season reports from sci-fi and fan websites.

TrekToday and the Trek BBS has a few interesting insights of the inner workings of Bergama and Paramount in some of the latest postings. Don’t really feel like searching back to list here, but it includes some friction among actors, producers, long term Trek people, and other network execs. Sad, really.

Hey! I got a typo in the thread title!

Cool.
Some of the things that tipped Manny off to having only one year were:

Moving the series to Friday night.

Virtually no promotion planned at all.

A severely limited budget.

Major network execs negativity towards Trek.
He knew all that before he started work here. One person even implied that the network execs had made the descision as early as the middle of Season II that there would be nore than 4 seasons, maybe even only 3.

Were they basing that on the dreck that Bergama flung out of their cages first half of Season II which drove away old fans and new viewers in droves? Bah humbug.

Mark my words, there will be no successful Trek while Bergama is involved. (ID this quote idea and you win a cookie.)

Got your email; here I am.

Neither. As a ficitional character, her personality doesn’t matter too much but if I had to choose, I’d definitely prefer the timid, sweet, and shy Hoshi from the main universe. I like girls next door and Ezri, my other Trek love, has a pretty similar personality.

I’ve been growing increasingly apathetic towards the SDMB and Enterprise for the past six weeks or so and just haven’t been around much. For the longest time, you guys were the only reason I even posted here and with that ending combined my general ambivalence towards the board, I’ve just not been too keen on posting.

And not to hijack the thread but for anyone interested, I was given full medical clearance to work this past Wednesday and return to my job as of May 2nd, one day short of six months after the accident.

Some Klingon dude in ST6 said there would be no peace as long as Kirk lived.
(?)

I get cookie now?
I think Berman might stick around, but Braga is busy with another series called “Threshold.”

Half is just as bad as whole Bergama, though, ain’t it?

Yeay!

btw, hijack all you want. It’s a Trek Doper thread.

It was movie 4, TVH. But, close enough. Check your browser cache, the cookies are there.

Can you clear the carbs out of my cache?

As Aesiron indicated, I too have been blasé about the show. Concentrating enough to divine a reason, it’s more because of its failure to draw me in than because of its imminent demise. The episode had great panda; thanks; but like Chinese food – what am I gonna chew on in an hour? It’s not even as fun to jibe and call him Quantum because I don’t feel they’re really listening to the fans complaints or ribbing.

After my usual nits I’ve got some constructive/revisionist criticism, so skip ahead if you’re bored.

[ul][li]My first reaction to all the name dropping from TOS is “Ooh, ooh, I know that!” so it served its shallow purpose, but then I’m annoyed for a longer time afterward that everything in the entire galaxy revolves around the same lineage of people.[]Archer says, “anything to have one less hostile species out there.” I felt he should say “out here” and that’s part of their problem – the Trek universe to them is “out there” not “here.”[]Mayweather looks buff. They should show him off more.[]What can I say about Kelby? This ain’t the Pit. I hate it when a major position is just filled by a character you’ve never seen or even heard about and who is going to disappear after this episode. And where did they get this actor? He seems so incredibly wooden. I even caught some shots where he was looking, not at Trip’s eyes, but at his mouth, during their conversation.[]Good green makeup, but when Navaar licked Archer I could see her pink tongue. Couldn’t she just suck on a green Jolly Rancher before that scene? … :D[]I liked that they at least put a bruise on Trip’s cheek after his fight with Kelby. It’s a slight bit of logical reality that makes a scene work. Too bad they don’t bother very often.[]I really hate the tether idea. Let’s just say the tether is strong enough. Anyone care to guess at the stress at either end? The whole ship can be pulled from one point? Of course, I did just love how the ship banked as it was being pulled through the atmosph…, oh, never mind.[*]Pheromones – 1) crank up the air filters 2) put on some masks, hazmat suits, or space suits 3) the guys resist? T’Pol and Hoshi knock ‘em out and stick ‘em in suits. 4) put female guards in the isolation area, blah, blah, etc., etc. – Use Some Freakin’ Common Sense![/ul][/li]
There’s no character development. The twist wherein the Orion women are actually in control was great! Then they did nothing with it. Pheromone “possession” just doesn’t develop character. It might point out the far end of the spectrum, like Sulu swashbuckling through the corridors, but they didn’t do that here. At least they tried a bit with Trip and T’Pol after the “main plot” ended. The interaction, however, was too cliché. How about:
Trip and T’Pol walking …
T’Pol: “We make a good team.”
Trip: “I’m just surprised at how much control this Bond gave me.”
T’Pol: “The Bond is not one of control. It is more like an additional subconscious; a third opinion. You are still in control; as much as you ever were.”
Trip, smiling: “Hey, was that a joke?”
T’Pol: “No.”
Trip, squinted, “Does this Bond stay forever?”
T’Pol: “There is no reason to worry…”
Trip, smiling: “I wasn’t worried, actually, I… Do whole families have this Bond? I’m mean, I’m just wondering if some cousin is going to show up in my mind sometime.”
T’Pol, pauses: “Koss and I did not Bond. Do not worry about losing control…
Trip, laughing: “Worry about my losing control? Hah!”
T’Pol: “…He will not be in your mind. I will also endeavor to keep from interfering as well.”
Trip: “Oh, so you’re in control and it’s all up to you, is it?”
T’Pol: “I am not in control of you.”
Trip: “But you need to be in control.”
T’Pol: “I do not wish to be a distraction.”
Trip, smiling: “Don’t worry. You’re not distracting me … anymore. I know what I want now. Until I put in for transfer I didn’t realize what was important to me.”
T’Pol, pauses: “Good…”
Trip: “What do you want?”
T’Pol: “There is nothing that I want.”
Trip: “Well, then you don’t want enough.”
T’Pol: “I want what I can reasonably expect to achieve.”
Trip: “What you can expect to control. But if you can’t control it, you don’t want to be responsible for it. You can’t trust anyone else.”
T’Pol: “We trust each other on this ship all the time.”
Trip: “Oh, the consequence there is just death. That’s easy, especially when everyone you love is gone. It takes a lot more when you have to live, whatever the result.”
T’Pol: “You’re saying that I should trust you?”
Trip: “No, I’m saying you should trust you, and what you want.”
T’Pol, kisses Trip: “I want you to stay, even though you’ve already made up your mind.”
Trip: “Are you playing it safe because I’ve already put in for transfer?”
T’Pol: “No.”
Trip: “Good. Oh and the transfer I put in three days ago back to Enterprise was just approved.”

What if there was a scene where Archer talks to Porthos. “Old friend, I love ya, but I wish you could give Me advice. I don’t know why these women are getting to me. Erica came close, but I always had to one-up-her, but at least she’s got Columbia. Maybe I need a break.” Then T’Pol enters and confronts Archer about his irrational behavior. She claims he’s just experiencing lust. Archer gets all defensive and turns away with a “What do you know about lust?” and T’Pol turns her eyes aside and raises an eybrow.

Some men in engineering leave their stations and follow along in one of the Orion women’s wakes. The female engineers intervening are brushed aside. The men jockey for position and then a fight breaks out. Trip intervenes but is knocked aside on his can; and a woman engineer steps in and decks a guy and gets another in an arm lock. The other women engineers break up the fight and hold the men.

Lingering effects of the Roddenberry influence. Our Heroes are all good and wise people, and conflicts cannot arise between them. Thus the conflict must be external, which means extraneous characters are introduced to drive the plots, after which they can be summarily disposed of.

Compare Firefly or the new Galactica, which get plenty of conflict from the simple fact that different people are, duh, Different People, who frequently have contradictory needs and desires.

Sometimes, watching latter-day Trek, I wonder if these people know the first thing about storytelling and narrative structure.

(On the other hand, I’ve been watching the final season of DS9, TiVo’d off Spike. Just saw “Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges,” scripted by Galactica exec Ron Moore, this morning while riding the stationary bike. Now that is a hell of a show. Makes the current state of Trek even more depressing by comparison.)

Well I’ve been avoiding reading this in case I could catch a re run. But that doesn’t look good. Ah well.

How many more we got? 5? Then no BSG for another 6 months.

At least Serenity is coming soon…

Told you so.

When did I argue?
