Ok, please forgive me if I’m asking a moronic question. I have looked through the help files, but haven’t been able to figure out a way to make Windows not ask for a password when I log in. I don’t actually have to input a password, but it asks me each time I boot up to put one in. The dialog box has the heading “Windows Networking” and doesn’t have a help button or anything else to get more info. I’ve tried going to the network and password windows under control panel, but haven’t had any luck. Any advice? It drives me nuts and I think it’s one of the few things keeping me from being a healthy, happy, productive member of society.
In the network settings, on the first tab there is a drop down menu. Change it to Windows Login and reboot…
If you have never set a password, just hit return and it will thereafter start Windows without asking for a password. If you have set one, go to Control Panel, Passwords, click on “Change password” and leave the new PW field blank. If you don’t remember the old password, find all the .pwl files and delete them and next time login with a blank PW.
if those don’t work, here’s my WAG, as a computer-challenged person: i was poking around the bios (??) screen in order to turn off the computer’s power management scheme since it seemed to be conflicting with win98’s pms. i thought i saw an option for passwords. too scared to go back in there to check for ya. my computer is shaky enough as it is. good luck…
DO NOT FK with the password in your BIOS, unless you know what you are doing (which you don’t, or you wouldn’t be asking). If you set a password in the BIOS, you will be unable to make changes to the BIOS settings without that password. That could be bad 18 months (arbitrary long time) when you have forgotten the password you set, but are trying to add a new 100GB hard drive for storing porn and Napster downloads.
One thing that seems to be neglected in the previous instructions (or I’m not awake yet and missed it.)
An important step when saving the password as empty is to delete the stars in the confirmation dialogue box.
i.e. after hitting OK on the initial password dialogue box with an empty password field, you are presented with a second dialogue box asking to confirm your password. the top password field has a line of stars, the bottom password field is empty.
Highlight and Delete the line of stars, and hit OK on the confirmation dialogue box. Then shut down and restart and you should no longer get a password prompt.
