I don’t suppose it’s ocurred to you that the only people around here saying that it should have been slowed are lefties who first claim that fucking up society was necessary in order to accomplish equality, and then claim that to have gone about it in a more reasonable manner would have slowed the process. This is then followed by claims that that was what I wanted.
The really annoying thing about all that isn’t so much that it’s completely erroneous, but that blacks had pretty much already accomplished equality…or at least had set all the necessary wheels in motion (government-protected demonstrations, judicial rulings, etc.)…before white liberals began to get involved and decided to include it as part of their fucking up of the country.

Those photos do not typify societal behavior of that time. Even today there exists plenty of people who are capable of the same type of behavior, and they no more define society at large than the people in the photos above did.
It’s amusing to note that of all the ills I’ve lain at the feet of liberalism, virtually all the attention gets paid to my comments about societal crassness and everyone acts like I’d gladly trade the worst of yesteryear for a few polite manners. This is not only false, but IMO it’s a deliberate attempt to trivialize and marginalize my complaints about the damage the left has done to this society over the last forty years.
Do you think the people depicted in those photos suffered? Do you think their family members and loved ones suffered because of what happened to them? If so, I can tell you that the pain and suffering caused by wrongheaded liberalism over the last forty years is worse by many thousandfold.
How many people have been brutally killed, and how many of their family members’ and loved ones’ lives have been made miserable by, slayings committed by gangs whose existence is defended on the grounds of anti-racism? (It’s perfectly alright to outlaw the Klan, but man you better keep your keep your damn racist hands off the Crips and the Bloods.)
How many people have died, and how many of their family members’ and loved ones’ lives have been ruined because of drugs and their concomitant problems, which can often include crime, gangsterism, beatings and killings? (And this doesn’t take into account the more minor but still important question involving all the people who have been robbed or had their houses broken into by druggies looking for stuff they could sell or pawn for drug money. I hardly know anyone who hasn’t been robbed or had things stolen at some point over the years for precisely that reason.)
And how many perfectly viable - and, for all we know, feeling - little babies, who’ve had absolutely no say so in their own creation - have been ripped into pieces by abortions performed in the name of allowing women to ‘choose’ what to do with their ‘own’ bodies? (A most laughable argument if ever there was one.)
How many people have been raped, tortured, and/or murdered…and how many of their family members and loved ones have had their lives ruined…by criminals let loose by liberal judges and correctional systems who went through a period of blaming crime on the injustices caused by society, and whose policies finally became so outrageous that the country finally had to enact three-strikes laws in an effort to keep criminals in jail?
So you see, the pain and suffering caused by wrongheaded liberal dipshitism outweighs by far the pain and suffering caused by racists of the fifties…and by many orders of magnitude, IMO.
And now we come down to the more minor issue of societal crassness. Just the other day I was in the neighborhood Wal-Mart looking at magazines (along with women, kids, etc. when a couple of young guys passed behind me talking in a perfectly loud, conversational voice how he told some motherfucker to stick something up his ass. This was only a day or two after I witnessed a young mother in a nice neighborhood out in her yard talking on her cell phone while her two young children played in the drive. If I tell you that ‘asshole’, ‘fuck’, and ‘fucker’ made up 50% of her vocabulary, it would not be much of an exaggeration. Then there was the time when I pulled up to a stoplight next to a good-looking young blond of the cheerleader type in a Mustang convertible, tapping her finger on the steering wheel along with music she had blaring from her car to the effect of “Get down on your knees and suck my badass dick”. And if I had a dollar for every time some dipshit refused to dim his brights or tailgated me even though I was already going five or ten miles an hour over the speed limit, or either refused to let me change lanes or merge into traffic, I’d be a very rich guy indeed.
None of these things have emanated from the influence of the right, I can guarantee you.
And Equipoise, your most recent posts convinces me more than ever that trying to answer the ‘game’ that you proposed would have been a waste of time. So, just for the record…nah, I don’t think I’ll play.
Although I will say that if I time-travelling ability and the power to change whatever I wanted in the past, I would do two things and none of the above mentioned liberal bullshit would have liberal bullshit whose consequence have infested this society over the last forty years would have happened. They are as follows:
- I would keep John Kennedy from being killed.
This would have kept Johnson’s inept hands off the controls and most likely prevented the escalation of the war and the incredibly wasteful (in terms of lives lost) pulled-punches way in which it was fought.
- I would prevent the rise of the Beatles and the British invasion that followed in their wake.
It was in the wake of the Beatles that the fad for long hair (which tomndebb mentioned upthread) and oddball clothing took root and set the huge baby-boom generation against the ‘Establishment’…as it was called back then…and the resentment they felt over their treatment by society is the true genesis of the idea that everything about society as it existed then had to go…up to and including civility and decent behavior.
These people then found a rallying point in the Vietnam war, which had gone to shit thanks to the Johnson administration’s handling of it, and we were off to the races.
Flower-power, the anti-war movement, tree-hugging, the eager adoption of drug use, the so-called sexual revolution, etc., ensued. It was also at this time that the left belatedly began to embrace civil rights (and feminism) and to develop their tactic of using hate-speech (racist, bigot, male chauvinist pig, etc.) anytime anyone said anything they didn’t like, no matter how reasonable.
And of course, it didn’t take long for Democratic politicians to begin to pander to these people - who were suddenly coming of age to vote - and to appoint judges who began to legislate from the bench and circumvent the process for change to the constitution through amendments.
And thus we get to where we are today and very little of it is good. But the toothpaste is out of the tube and we can’t put it back in. Insead, all we Right-thinking[sup]TM[/sup] citizens can do is vote Republican to try to keep things from getting even more fucked up…and which is why, despite accusations from the left that I am ‘teh EVIILLL’ for doing so, I will be voting for McCain next month.
