Starving Artist - we remember you

Not much to talk about. You can post there as an “anti” although you’re limited to a forum called “General Rants”. Also, all your posts are on time delay - they’re screened by a moderator before they get posted, which can be a bit annoying. (This is a while ago, so things might have changed since then.)

So I started one thread taking on all comers and was having a decent time of it by my rights when I got banned by moderators who didn’t like my tone. (It’s true that I did not have a particularly reverent attitude towards White Nationalism, but my posts were substantive, on the whole.)

Well, while we’re certainly self-selected to some extent, I don’t really think the Stormfront comparison is fair; we’re far closer to a fair sampling than a narrow group of narrow-minded racists, and I do think there is enough of a diversity of opinion here to get reasonable feedback with a good likelihood.

The Stormfront comparison was illustrative of the phenomenon - obviously this is nothing like that place.

But do you not agree that there are quite a lot of people out there who would have a very different take on SA and his views than the consensus of this MB? How about on Free Republic? The Rush Limbaugh Fan Club?

If you agree, then you’re acknowleging that the perception of SA is at least to some extent the result of the skew of the audience here.

This is true, but trivial.

Sincerely believing something that is posted in deliberate attempt to elicit a negative response is still trolling.

I’m not really concerned with how his politics are viewed here, but the reactions he as a person elicits. There’s certainly a skew to the politics of this board, but still, there are people here that don’t fall in with the mainstream that aren’t universally loathed. And neither does being liberal guarantee you the unanimous adoration of the board (case in point: too many Der Trihs pittings to count). Basically, there’s a sizable subset of ultimately decent people around here, whose opinion on who else is decent does carry some weight, regardless of political leaning.

'Cause there’s no fucking “like” button.

CMC fnord!

Politics isn’t the only thing that counts, but it counts.

I only remember getting into one disagreement with him that turned personal. He may say that he only gives as good as he gets, but his definition of an insult and mine differ considerably.

Well, the thing is, at least from my perspective, is that his insults can reveal a pretty nasty underlying worldview. It’s not the insult itself that’s so offensive but the prejudice it sprang from (see: faithfool is too ugly to rape.)

That’s from observation, not really experience. We came to insults once. I made a general statement with the insult ‘‘asshole’’ which he (reasonably) interpreted to be me calling him an asshole, and he called me a dumb bitch in retaliation. Seems fair.

My favorite sort of poster is the one who ignores personal insults and sticks to the substance of the argument regardless of the hostility of the person involved. Not only does it make the attacker look like a tool, it elevates the tone of the conversation considerably.

Not nearly as entertaining, though.

Allow me to reiterate a post I just made in the “Enough…” thread:

Bullshit. Complete and utter bullshit.

To be fair, we didn’t give Starving Artist a chance to deliver his “faithfool is so ugly, when she was a kid her parents hung a porkchop around her neck so the dog would play with her” thesis.

Yeah, I didn’t say she was so ugly she had to sneak up on a glass of water to take a drink either. It would have been too, like, rapish.

Among your many problems, SA, is that you think you’re funny when you’re not, and you’re incapable of playing to an audience because you enjoy holding them in contempt.

Rape was the immediate topic of your insult. It wasn’t “in” the picture, it was the subject of the picture. Faithfool said she has not had sex with men who took an opportunity to rape her, and you opined that this must be because she is ugly. (Or unpleasant in some way detectable on message boards anyway , I don’t exactly recall. But the discussion has since move don to the idea of insults based on ugliness.

No, she stated merely that the men in her life had no trouble controlling themselves. And that was what I answered. Frankly I think it’s misandrist to assume that all men are would-be rapists in the presence of attractive women, which is the assumption being drawn by your accusations.

Which means (especially in the context of the conversation she was participating in) exactly the same thing as “the men in her life have not taken opportunities to rape me.”

This. Absolutely this. In this thread alone there are several people with oddly-inflated beliefs of how much people dislike them. For instance, I’d never remember that mhendo was an asshole if he didn’t tell us he is in every damned thread he’s in these days.

What good did it do Boyo Jim? Is he rich or famous? Are beautiful English majors clamoring for a taste of his seed? Because if they are I can write a run-on sentence that takes pages to go nowhere with the best of them, ie: many of my posts here.

The cranky and pervy uncle type? Because there are plenty of those in my wife’s family. We take turns [del]weaseling out of[/del] (sorry!) avoiding family functions.

You can see why i feel so much shame when Starving Artist takes me to task for being rude and insulting. He sets such a good example of how to behave towards people in a temperate and respectful manner.
