Pine tar was harvested in great amounts in NC through the Civil War, thus “Tarheels”…legend says it was a quote from Gen. Grant…thought Missouri was the “show me” state.
Missouri is the Show Me State, not Delaware. I THOUGHT Delaware was the Blue Hen State, but I could be mistaken.
And I THOUGHT that the phrase “tar heels” was a compliment to the tenacity of the fighting men of North Carolina. That is, they always stood their ground under fire, as if they had tar on their heels and were thus “glued” to one spot.
Many states have their nicknames decided by a statute of some kind.
When the Maryland quarter came out, most people were surprised to see that it read “The Old Line State”. That wasn’t the nickname that was being taught in most Maryland schools at the time.
Wisconsin is the “Assfuckingest State in the Union”
What’s that supposed to mean?
