State of Oregon has collective freak-out

Here’s the FB comments. You should be able to see the page without being logged in.

Some posts are clearly satire. Others it’s difficult to tell.

I read a Click-Bait article about some of the tweets people were sending in and had a belly-laugh.

To paraphrase one, “I REFUSE to pump my own gas! I had to do it once while on a trip to California and nearly died! This is a skill for professionals only!”

… or some such shit.

Oregon: The West Coast Florida

First legalized marihuana and now this.

Let this be a lesson kids, marihuana is a dangerous drug!;)

Floridian here. The days of a full attendant are long gone. Unless one is disabled you gotta pump your own.

Huh. Are self serve gas stations required to pump gas for disabled drivers? Many stations have a single employee inside the store. How would they do this?

I once had a very nicely dressed woman call out to me as I finished pumping my gas. She asked if I could pump her gas. I walked over to do just that, then wondered why, so I asked her, “why?”. She said she didn’t want to smell like gas. I told her I didn’t want to smell like gas either. I left, she glared.

I’m in NJ and y’all are just jealous.

This statement does not compute.

How incompetent must one be to wind up smelling like gasoline after a routine fill?

The poor dears in Oregon will adjust, or go all-electric.

I wonder why the qualifier that it can only be done in counties with less than 40,000 people? What’s the point in that?

A ban on self pumping is a boon to most gas stations. They get to charge more. So the old law has been supported for a long time by the gas station lobby.

But if a gas station isn’t very busy, there isn’t enough business to support a pump jockey.

How do you legally help these people out? Most of them are in low density areas (e.g., a lot of E. Oregon), ergo you base it on county population.

And if there is only one attendant they can refuse to pump the gas. Sorry folks, we are on our own…

A few states and local governments have had similar laws in the past. The idea, presumably, was to preserve jobs.

A few of us are old enough to remember when you drove up to a gas station and three uniformed guys would run up to pump the gas, wipe the Windows and check the oil while you stayed in the car.

How many dead? How many cars and gas stations have gone up in flames already, just so liberal Californians can pump their own gas in Oregon? The death toll must be enormous already. How long can the car-nage go on? Pumping gas is a job best left to the professionals.

I mean, some poor Oregonian, looking at the business end of a gas pump for the very first time in their lives, what will they do? Point the nozzle at their head and say “is this thing on” while they squeeze the nozzle? While smoking pot.

While singing the whole time.

In fairness, the number of Oregonians who would like to be able to pump their own gas outweighs those who insist on full service. Unfortunately, those who like the status quo are louder, more obnoxious, and as can be seen in those FB comments, sometimes not too bright.

We could somehow survive if things changed. I’ve even heard tales of Oregonians who have dared to travel out of state and somehow didn’t become stranded at a gas pump. Please don’t judge us. (New Jersey, however, you can totally judge.)

This was done because, in large part, Oregon east of the Cascades is a moonscape. It’s sparsely populated farmland, with a few exceptions like Bend (pop 92,000), and gas stations can be scarce. Passing this law allows stations to have gas available even if the station is closed, by using automated pumps. I personally think gas attendants are an archaic notion, but it provides some employment for folks with limited skills or income, and I admit to being happier sitting in my car than standing in a pounding rain to pump gas.

Gatopescado:

Sure you don’t mean New Jersey?

ftg:

New Jersey, which doesn’t allow self-pumping, has the lowest gas prices on the east coast. I doubt there’s a single New Yorker or Pennsylvanian who won’t fill up his tank in New Jersey when he’s passing through the state.

I lived in Jersey for six years, and while it was a pain in the ass to have to wait for the attendant on busy days, I’m here in Michigan with negative windchill and wishing like hell I didn’t have to pump my own gas today.

If I were in Oregon I would probably also lose my shit. You get spoiled.

Nobody is losing their shit, especially since it has zero impact on population centers. In fact, the first I’ve heard of it was reading this thread.

Yes, thank you! This is the reason and the need for the new change in the law. Outside of the I-5 corridor the small towns and rural areas do not operate on a 24hr schedule and you can’t get gas in the off hours. If I had a family emergency in the middle of the night and I had forgot to get gas, my options were to hope my 5 gallon lawn mower gas can in the garage was full or call the sheriff to get enough gas from them to get where civilization runs 24 hours.

My local Shell station/Mini-Mart closes at 11 pm. There is now a sign that says I can self-serve from 11 pm to 5 am when they are closed. The rest of the time an attendant will still be pumping everyone’s gas.

But as usual the news media is only reporting part of the story, in order to generate views and clicks.

Is Oregon now a self-serve state like all the others (except NJ)? Nope. Are they firing all the gas station attendants in Oregon? No. Is everyone going to have to pump their own gas now? No. Are you going to be able to pump your own gas if you want to? Nope, only during the off hours. If there is an attendant on duty they are still going to do it. Passing through from out of state, can you now pump your own gas if you want to? Nope.

Can I now get some fucking gas in the middle of the night? YES!

But please carry on with your recreational outrage due to partial news reporting.

But article after article throughout the U.S. has numerous Facebook posts from people outraged at the thought of self service!

Well, yeah, but they all have the same dozen FB posts cherry picked from a small set of Oregonians with their heads up their asses. News flash - Oregon has some blithering idiots, just like every other state.
