There will still be full service available, but the transition for a lot of people will be messy.
I think it’s about time, but I can hear the complaining already.
About time. I’ve lived in Oregon for most of my life and lately (for certain values of “lately”, more like “for the past decade or so”) waiting for a pump jockey to come up to the window and take my card has taken longer than the actual fill-up. Plus, they won’t top off my tank. My car has some weird fill neck design and the pump shuts off before the tank is filled, so a “fill-up” gives me more like 3/4 of a tank, not a full tank. Just let me do it. I’ll get it done in half the time and fill my tank right.
It is a really, really bad idea. If your car has a “finicky” neck, you probably need a visit to the mechanic to ensure that you’re don’t have some damage or a blockage. Otherwise your car was intentionally designed this way and you need to stop “topping up”, it’s dangerous and terrible for the environment.
I will be watching the news from Oregon for the multiple explosions of cars and/or pumps (as I understand it from previous threads on self-pump versus “full service”, this is the inevitable result of this change)
Personally, I’m glad they’re leaving it 50/50. I’m perfectly capable of pumping my own gas, but it’s nice to not have to. I don’t mind waiting for the operators most of the time.
We have already been able to pump our own gas in less populated Oregon counties, technically only from 6pm to 6am, but nobody cares any more. I don’t think that anyone has pumped gas into my car, except for me, in probably 2 years. There are no gas pumping police.
I find it kinda sad that one argument I hear over and over, is “I don’t want to get out in the heat, or cold, or rain, or smell gas fumes.” It’s fine if someone has to do it all day long for minimum wage, but drivers can’t deal with it once a week.
