I did, indeed. Dunno where that one came from – it’s not one I watched.
This is my first time reading comments here and I have to ask you - is that how you really feel?
I used to self-identify as a conservative (Canadian style, at least), and yeah, pretty much that’s how I feel. The modern conservative movement, pretty much world-wide, has abandoned everything that I ever supported, and embraced the worst of what I never supported.
The late, great conservative comedian PJ O’Rourke dropped a timeless bit of wisdom when, in 2016, he reluctantly endorsed Hillary Clinton. “She’s wrong about absolutely everything,” he said, “but she’s wrong within normal parameters.”
He, a classic conservative, was terrified of what Trump would do. Those of us who are classic progressives are far more dismayed than he could be, as we’ve watched the Republican party fall into line behind Trump’s demagoguery. Someone like Mitt Romney is wrong about absolutely everything, but wrong within normal parameters. Trump has tried, and is continuing to try, to destroy democracy; and almost every single Republican leader has fallen in line behind him.
democracy is such a nuisance
In a word: “Yes”.
It sounds like, from here and elsewhere, that this speech has fired up Biden’s politically active base, which is, of course, incredibly important.
Welcome to The Dope. While it is a left-leaning community here, conservatives are welcome provided they can back up their assertions. Those who can’t complain about “hive minds” and flounce off in a huff.
Ursula Kroeber Le Guin, from The Dispossessed:
The process, compared to a well-managed executive conference, was a slab of raw beef compared to a wiring diagram. Raw beef, however, functions better than a wiring diagram would, in its place – inside a living animal.
She’s not talking about democracy, precisely; the characters are, to the best of their ability, anarchists; who vote, but the votes aren’t theoretically binding on any individual. But ever since I read that it’s seemed like a good analogy for democracy to me.
The trick is to be able to tell the healthy meat from the cancer.
She signed a book for me. I told her to address her signature to “the repossessed”. She was amused.
I’m a Dope so hopefully, I fit in even though I’m a reformed Dem. So as The Arnold says: "I’ll be back and if I make a statement I can back it up.
Forgive me for pushing the boundries of P&E (and good taste), but I was at the gym watching TV without the sound, and a commercial got me visualizing a Snickers ad/Katie Britt parody. 'You’re not you when you’re hungry. ’
No, I think Snickers taste fine.
