State of the Union Address, March 7, 2024

Johnson was an uncomfortable, smirking little worm who couldn’t even keep himself from applauding under the desk at times when Joe said something that was clearly the truth. He’s clearly that muddle headed.

And yes, I’m serious - applauding in his lap at times as if it was an involuntary response to things that were being said. It was really odd.

Wait, are you saying that he’s not old? Or that old people can’t give speeches?

I was … applauding in my lap. Ya, that’s right. Applauding. That’s the ticket. I’ll be in my bunk. Applauding.

They’d only know one song, “We’re So Vain.”

I’m glad to see others agree with me on the junior senator from Alabama. BTW, why the rant about human trafficking? I think we all agree it’s bad. Is she saying that Biden’s policies encourage this? I would think they would like to allow trafficked women into this country. First, with all our guns, we are the only ones who can save them. And second, if they are not allowed to cross the border, they will be able to get abortions if they get pregnant and heaven forbid a woman who is kidnapped and gangraped be allowed an abortion. I am trying to think if she actually had any policies other than Biden bad, economy bad, everything terrible because of Biden. I still think that smiling while detailing how bad everything is comes off as super creepy.

Also I wasn’t really watching the Speaker but going back to watch him in the clips, he really did look like he was going to throw up. Also always a fan of the sea of democratic women in white.

I listened to most of it on the radio, so I didn’t catch any of the opposition’s antics.

I was pretty impressed, he came on strong and kept it up the whole time.

Neither. To clarify my offhand remark, what I meant to imply was that “yes he’s old, we can all see that but it doesn’t seem to be affecting his energy or his ability to do the job.”

Comparing Biden tonight to the orange bastards barely comprehensible fascist drivel is like night and day.

I could only watch bits&pieces of the speech, but while I admit to a certain amount of bias I was impressed with Biden’s body language. For the most part he seemed alert, relaxed and focused, and when it came time to engage the Pubbies it looked like he was having the time of his life.

Speaking of the Pubbies (in this case, specifically Empty Greene), I’m coming to the conclusion that they’re customers of the Acme Political Stunt Corporation: they keep trying things that blow up in their faces. And in the meantime, Biden is playing a political rope-a-dope.

A large contingent of them fell for the exact same rhetorical judo Biden played on them last year, when he again pointed out that they want to gut social security. Bunch of idiots.

That was spectacular. Funny how a decrepit old man with dementia keeps outwitting the Congressional Republicans.

It wasn’t so much a battle of wits, as a riot.

Here is a quote about the speech from Republican columnist Carrie Sheffield:

Imagine a Trumper saying this with a straight face.

mmm

Not much of a battle if only one side shows up with wits.

The Republicans only came half-prepared.

Biden came to kick ass and chew bubblegum. A reassuring virtuoso performance. Even Sen Langford was nodding his head in agreement. Contrast that with the Republican response. They didn’t just go to the bottom of the barrel, they went to the black mold on the bottom of the barrel. The biggest surprise in her response was that she wasn’t wearing a red robe and white cap. Her forced perpetual smile made her look like a customer of Joker Brand makeup. Her smug, condescending, and painfully slow delivery sounded like a kindergarten teacher on a lithium drip. How in the living hell did Alabama find two such pitifully inadequate Senators?

An unmitigated home run for Biden, IMO. Over an hour of non-stop focused energy. Pointing out that the major difference between himself and Dumpster Fire is their outlook on America was brilliant: looking forward instead of backward, focusing on others instead of himself, being optimistic instead of a whiny little bitch. I’d be very surprised if there isn’t a major spike in his polling numbers.

A couple of decades ago I stopped being able to watch SotUs. Whichever party holds the presidency, I just couldn’t bear the theatrics, the slogans, one side popping up and down and the other looking glum. Just didn’t add anything of value to me.

What is the general consensus as to whether a SotU has any effect on - well - pretty much anything or anyone?

This is data-driven (538’s Nathaniel Rakich).

Way too many big words. Hard to imagine a Trumper getting through that quote at all.

Thanks. Pretty much what I assumed.

Wow - Clinton has a couple of impressive outliers! (Or is that outliars?)
