States on the US $5 bill

I always thought that the illustration of the Lincoln Memorial on the back of the referenced bill listed state names. I just noticed that the lower level, third from the right says “HAMPSHIRE”. Is this a new state I was never told about back in school? OK, it’s been a long time back, but I’m pretty sure I’d remember.

Did they just run out of room for the complete name?

It’s New Hampshire. The bill shows the state names exactly as they are engraved on the Lincoln Memorial. Because of perspective, (or maybe it’s blocked – I don’t have a bill handy) you don’t see the entire name.
