Stats on 99er dopers

Still here. I admit that I read much more than I post, but I read here every day.

Hear, hear! For what it’s worth, Chronos, when I joined, I took you to have been around here for ages.

I know! I regret my lurking period before finally joining, as I could have been a 99er. But if I’d joined earlier, I would definitely not have picked the name I use here, as I’d just finished re-reading the novel where my name appears just before taking the plunge and signing up. I doubt my storied career would have happened if I’d joined as Ebenezer Wheezer, my first inclination.

You are correct.

The policy on republication on chat logs (from back in the day) was that you could publish them if you had permission from the copyright holder OR you had permission from everyone who was in the chat, because like postings, individuals all have a right as well.

Like the agreement on this site:

There is precedence: Message board postings were republished in the last of The Straight Dope books.

Right now probably need to focus most of all on current events; facing forward is the way to go. But I’d like to see a time and place where investigation and use of this archival content was possible.

Same. Was never in the AOL SD chats, though.

I do remember the AOL message board reprints in one of the latter two SD books. I refer to them by color:

Black - the original from 1984
Yellow - the 1988 book
Red - the 1994 book
Dark Blue and Purple – the 1998 and 1999 books, cannot remember which color goes with which year.

Storied career? Hell, you’d have missed out on over 15 years’ worth of Mercotan family reunions !!!

Still not posting one heck of a lot but I am definitely alive. First day registration and been here ever since.

Tontine? Count me in.

Honestly, I kind of forgot this place existed, for… about a decade. Sorry.
Maybe I should try to be more active? How much has this place changed? For that matter, how much have I changed?

Based on posts in this thread I am winning the battle of the lurkers:

Jesus Christ. I guess we’re all different, I never could understand how on an interactive site like this one how you can’t find a means of replying to something that’s of great interest to you. I don’t think I could ever be a total lurker unless I was dead…and then you’d never even know!

The tontine idea would have intrigued me had we started it back in ‘99 at, say, a one-dollar buy-in. The pot could be worth quite a bit by now, and maybe even paying small dividends to the remaining ‘99ers (as described in Thomas B. Costain’s 1955 novel) before too much longer. Starting one today? I wouldn’t think much of my chances.

Another thread of old timers. We seem to have one of these every year or so, don’t we?

Anyway, I missed being a 99er by 3 days. I lurked for about 4 months before that, so I could have been one. Just didn’t see a need to respond to a thread until [del]after civilization fell[/del] the year-odo had rolled over.

I was never on the AOL board. I did use AOL for a while back in 1995, but that was only because I was living in a small town and it was the only way I could get online. But I thought all the AOL stuff was crap so I only used their portal to the Real Internet™.

I’m here too.

The posts per day used to be in double digits. Parenthood has majorly cut into my Dope time.

Yet another '99er here, whose participation has declined. Partly for being busy doing other things, but to be frank, also because my brain just ain’t quite up to where it was in the past, sadly. So it’s much more difficult to match wits with all the amazingly bright people who post more regularly, or just to submit fresh comments before others beat me to it.

Anyway, considering the Departed List, the only name I remember is the only SDMB poster that Joel Robinson of MST3K referenced in the show: Hi, Opal! A rare honor indeed.

I also wonder about the number of the Departed. It seems surprisingly low, considering the huge population of current and former posters here. Hmm… Maybe posting here induces extra longevity?

And last but not least: Hi, **TubaDiva **dear! You’re a remarkable woman, and we all owe you enormous gratitude for all your hard work!

I looked at that thread, then saw how many you have now. Jeebus H. Tapdancin’ Christmas, you now have over seventy seven thousand posts? I signed up a few months after you did, and have less than 10% of you. I need to get crackin’!

I am embarrassed to say that even though I am a 99er, I have poked hovered clicked and read everywhere I can.

I cannot find this material.

Could someone please tell me how I can discover my own statistics on the board?

  1. 7/13/99. .16/day. Used to be under .1/day, where it needs to be. So I have gone dark for a bit.
