Steal This Film

Steal This Film, one of the best films distributed by the company I work for is up on hulu, available to be watched for free.

Which is only appropriate: it’s a documentary about Pirate Bay, and the current effed up state of copyright law. It’s really a great overview of the whole issue, taking as a starting point the legal battles swirling around Pirate Bay. Has anyone else seen it?

Once again the world ends at the US border…

If you mean to say you can’t view this from outside the US (which I’m forced to guess, between the cryptic nature of your post and the cutesy nature of your location info), then you should just google for it: the film is available all over the web; it was distributed for free. The main difference in the version that’s at hulu is that it’s got both parts edited together; around the web you’ll find it as Part 1 and Part 2.

But there’s also the ‘bonus material’ that’s been called Part ‘2.5’ and then the promised ‘final cut’ once the trial finished (the verdict came in April). Do you know what all this includes? (I haven’t seen it yet, but I was sort of waiting to watch it when finished).

No I don’t, I’ll find out. Have you watched any of it yet?

No, I haven’t watched any yet. I’m getting one torrent of it provided by the main website and I’ll compare it to the Hulu version (though Hulu seems to give me fits, mostly because it’s Flash and Flash performance still seems poor on a Mac).

I did start watching Freedom State while waiting. Is Indieflix your company or is that just a Hulu thing? (Freedom State appears to be a remake/inspired by Shunji Iwai’s Picnic, and is about as fitfully entertaining.)

Haven’t seen it, but I wonder how many people will think this thread is about Steal This Movie, the Abbie Hoffman biopic.

I work for IndieFlix, and Freedom State is another of their films that’s available for free on hulu. It’s not without its flaws, Freedom State, but I found it overall pretty entertaining. It has a distinctly amateurish feel to it, but the lead actress’s performance makes it worth watching.

Another really great little film that’s on hulu is the doc about Japanese high school baseball, Kokoyakyu. I’m not a sports fan, but Hoop Dreams and Murderball, for example, are a couple of the best documentaries ever made, on any subject. *Kokoyakyu *is in their league. It’s just hard to market because it’s like exactly an hour long: too short to be a feature and too long to be a short.

Yeah I thought of that too. I thought a better title would be something like, The Revolution Will Be Downloaded. But I just work here.
