Steep Steps - Carved in Rock

Can anyone tell me where this is?

And perhaps a little history?

Thanks.

Could be this (Mountain Trail Of Huashan) in China

Mt. Huashan in China. Judging from some of the pics online, I would say that those awful steep steps are one of the easier parts of the trail. There are other parts like this:

Here’s a different view of your steps.

(on preview I see that Isamu beat me to it - oh well, at least I provided some links)

Correct. Part of the ascent at Hua Shan, near Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, China.

Link here.

Putting [Steep Steps - Carved in Rock] into Google image search returns this on the first page, identifying it as “Mt Huashan China”.

Doing a further Google image search on [Mt Huashan China steps] returns about a billions photos of these steps.

Obligatory “Google is your friend” message.

I believe my link is the source of the picture.

Well, Google must hate me today. That particular link is at the bottom of page 2 for me!

But, thanks to all for prompt, accurate and concise responses.

Thanks for the extra photos, eng_comp_geek. My balls have now gone so far up inside me that I can taste them.

Damn, I hate heights that require me to rely on my own coordination…

I’m guessing that there’s this ancient guru at the top, ready to dispense wisdom to all who seek it (or, at the very least, ready and willing to whack them with a cane).

I hadn’t realized the Chinese were so into M.C. Escher.

not sure where they are, but I think Led Zeppelin wrote a song about them.

Actually, I think there is a hotel at the top that is reachable by cable car. Or am I thinking of some other place with approx. 60,000 steps?

I can only assume that thing in the middle is a bench so you can stop, rest, contemplate and have a serious WTF-am-I-doing-here moment.

The worst thing is from the angle in the image, the planked ‘walkway’ seem to end after that ‘middle’ section, by the stone post - are you supposed to climb the rock by that post, which seems to be at a rather bad angle for not falling bass-ackwards into the abyss…
