Ever since Stephen’s ice cream, Americone Dream, came out Stephen has been claiming that he couldn’t try it because he gave up sweets for lent. At first I wasn’t sure if this was just a bizare part of his act. Then today I saw the episode where Willie Nelson came on. They did a comparison of ice cream where they were each supposed to taste the others ice cream. One thing that was really clear was that Stephen Colbert ate nothing. How about that, the lent thing is for real.
He’s well versed in Catholic theology, it’s not a stretch to believe he’s also devout.
Of course, the reason Colbert doesn’t let his kids watch the show is he’s concerned they’ll never believe him about anything ever again.
Colbert teaches sunday school.
He really is Catholic.
Colbert is a relatively liberal Catholic and he has mentioned how his parents instilled in him the idea that he should think about what he believes and not be afraid to question Catholic doctrine. Sort of that “Cafeteria Catholicism” that doesn’t sit well with the folks in Rome.
Good for Colbert, but does anybody give up anything else besides sweets for lent?
In my family, it’s customary to give up red meat. My brother gave up Playstation 2 (I point out that he does this by playing Halo 2 on my XBox all the time instead, but whatever).
See! Look, we’re not all stoopid and backwards!
Seriously though, that made my day.
I was listening to “love line” and some girl gave up her vibrator for lent…
Colbert was interviewed by Terri Gross of NPR’s “Fresh Air” program last year (I think) and talked about his Catholicism. He said he taught Sunday school and that there was “very little overlap” between the audience there and the audience for The Colbert Report.
Um… I alternate between giving up booze and coffee for Lent.
I can’t find Colbert’s ice cream, and he won’t eat it. That’s some business model Ben & Jerry’s has.
I knew a guy who gave up, um, pleasuring himself. Or so he said.
anecdote: One year my friend gave up soda and juices for Lent. At a party where they only had mixed drinks, people kept asking why she was drinking a cup of straight rum. Her only response was, “I’ll have you know that I am very religious!” I’m pretty sure she explained the Lent thing, but that answer cracked me up.
Wow. If that’s not being devout, I don’t know what is.
It’s what Jesus would do. Or Mary, anyway.
I gave up desserts for Lent too, but since we have a dispensation in the Archdiocese of NY for St. Patrick’s Day, I went and bought a container of his ice cream and ate much of it. Mmmmm–the chocolate doesn’t stay on the cone pieces sometimes, and there’s a little too much caramel for me, but it is an excellent ice cream with nice crisp waffle pieces in a good creamy vanilla.
Having Richard Holbrook come on was just fantastic. I heart Stephen!
And Willie Nelson was priceless - “‘Wheat’? I thought it said ‘Weed’!”
I have given up alcohol for Lent the past couple years…I could really use a drink about now…
For Lent? I gave up insisting that the Attorney General of the United States keep his job.
When you say you alternate, does that mean you give up booze in the morning and coffee in the evening?
Wow, I swear I thought that was only for meat. It’s for anything? I wish I had known that last weekend!
