Interesting, I didn’t expect an annoucement this fast. While I think it’s a shame Colbert will have to drop his conservative persona, this is a good choice and will certainly give Fallon a run for his money.
Huh. My skepticism was misplaced, apparently. I have misgivings, since I always found the celebrity and musical-guest segments on The Colbert Report to be tedious, and Late Night with Stephen Colbert is bound to have a lot more of them.
I don’t have any doubts that he can host a show as himself and I’m interested to see what that looks like. But I’m sorry to lose The Colbert Report even though it’s had a good long run.
This would be the best possible case. John Oliver was hilarious in the role. How’s is HBO show doing? I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this isn’t what actually ends up happening.
Very excited by this news. Colbert can do so much more than his “Colbert” persona schtick, as great as it is.
Here’s his statement, it’s fun:
“Simply being a guest on David Letterman’s show has been a highlight of my career,” Colbert said in a statement. “I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave’s lead. I’m thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth.”
I’m a big fan of Colbert and I wonder if this means that he’ll have to abandon The Report? I guess it’s too much to expect that he’ll do both shows, is it even possible? In any case, I will eagerly follow this development with eager eagerness. Let’s see how it develops. I was sad when Leno retired finally (for real.) I always thought he was under-rated. Jimmy Fallow isn’t bad, he has his own charm. I’ll tell you what show has really stunk: Conan on TBS, back when COnan followed Leno, he was great: daring, creative, interesting. When he was The Tonight Show, he was terrible he really dialed back, and now he’s doing TBS and i don’t what that show is… it’s just not as good
