Stephen King's The Plant now online

Hey folks – there’s been a fair amount of discussion here about King lately… FYI The_Plant is now available to download online from his Web site at http://www.stephenking.com. Having just downloaded it myself, here are some observations:

[ul]
[li]There is a payment method set up whereby you can have your $1.00 charged to your credit card through Amazon.com. As an existing customer they just pulled my existing card information, and I just had to click “okay”. It was VERY easy and VERY painless.[/li][li]Unlike his earlier online venture (Riding_The_Bullet), this new file is in PDF format!! No downloading to your Palm Pilot, you get to see the pages exactly as he wanted you to see them.[/li][li]The first installment is only 20 pages long, so it’s a quick read. Even though each PDF sheet is 8.5" by 11", the actual text area is about the size of a small hard cover book.[/li][li]King does offer you a way to download the file without first paying. If you want to send him a check for more than $1.00 you could do it this way (or just charge your buck through Amazon and send him a check for more money later).[/li][li]He does have you click on an agreement, so you can’t just go to his site and download it without first agreeing to his conditions.[/li][/ul]

I went for the “I’ll pay later…” route and read the first “chapter” (if you can call it that) without paying yet.

I’m rather dubious of this scheme of his – not that I have any love for mainstream publishers – so I’m withholding from paying right now. I certainly don’t think that I received a dollar’s worth of literature from the twenty pages of memos and letters I read during lunch. But, being a writer myself, I sort of have to support him to make my own conscience happy.

I did buy Riding the Bullet earlier this year and liked it a lot.

I’m curious to see if he gets the 75% payment rate he’s requiring. I’m sure there are a lot of people with less scruples than I who will be less than overwhelmed by chapter 1.

But, the question is…

Are the first 20 pages any good? (Is there any hint as to how many “downloads” this will turn out to be?)
