So I was browsing the SFF section today and saw an enormous paperback by Stephen Lawhead alongside several others. He’s one of those guys I always see (and the books always look interesting), but I’ve never read him. Is he any good?
For various reasons - the Pendragon Cycle was in my church library when I was growing up… so I read it many, many, many years ago.
I really, really liked the first book, I kind of liked the second, I finished the third (there were only 3 at the time, it was that long ago) because I’d read the other two, and you can’t just stop 80% of the way into a series (well, now I can, but I couldn’t then.) Overall, I’d say he was an ok author.
I can tell you for a fact that I’ve read several of his books. Can’t remember what a singel one of them was about. Not good enough to be memorable, but then, not bad enough to be memorable, either.

Oh, yeah. The Celtic alternate world stuff. S’okay. Disposable literature. I enjoyed them while I read them, and didn’t give 'em a second thought after I was done. I do recall being somewhat embarassed to read them in public because the covers looked like romance novels. (And reading novels with dragons and orcs on the cover is so much cooler…)
He is ok. The first three books in the Pendragon Cycle were an interesting Christian take on the Arthurian legends. They were no Mists of Avalon, but they were enjoyable. But I have not read much more than that.
A fundie relative bought me the Empyrion Saga in an attempt to wean me off secular SF. It didn’t work. The story was OK though, ish.
Wow, a series of “Ehs”. Guess I’ll buy the new Gemmell book instead.
