I saw this film on television at least ten years ago, and I’m sure it wasn’t new.
It was a Japanese sci-fi film, dubbed into English. There were at least three Western actors who were main characters, a middle-aged guy and two young people, a man and a woman. Those two were friends with a Japanese guy their age.
It was the future, there was space travel. The characters I’ve mentioned each received a sort of golden nut, or acorn, that fell from space and marked them for a quest. They came from a group of people in space who needed help, they were being attacked by some space bad guy. The ones who needed help flew in a space ship that looked like a sailing vessel from Earth.
The younger woman was from a rich family, and kind of wild, but she could pilot a personal ship very well. The younger Western man was a kind of ne’er do well. The older Western man had been military, but kicked out, I don’t remember why. He was a good guy though.
I’ve tried looking for this but my search skills are limited. I didn’t recognize any of the actors, so I didn’t know their names to help search.
