Sting, what are you talking about?

I’m listening to “Desert Rose” on Winamp here, and I’m thinking it’s a great sounding song. Thanks to Popup Video, I know the other guy is singing in some banned Algerian method. I know Sting likes to drive his Jag (nice car), that the driver wears the mask to make her/him look more “romantic”.

But I have no clue what he’s trying to sing. At first I was thinking “I felched a dead goat tod-ay-ay-ay-ay-ay” fit, but now I’m not sure.

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in pain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
These dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man’s desire

This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

(there’s more, of course, but I’m tired of typing. Lyrics © the obvious person)

I’ve been a huge fan of his ever since the very early days of the Police. The guy is very tallented, a huge ego-maniac, but tallented never the less.

But that video is irritating to me. It’s nothing but a Jaguar commercial. The driver looks silly in that mask. She’s short, barely able to see over the steering wheel, and the car is, quite frankly, ugly as sin. I know Ford/Jaguar coughed up lots of money to make that video but it seems that Sting has sold out quite obviously and deliberately. It’s particularly obvious when you see small snips of this video shown in the actual Jaguar commercial itself.

Shame on you Sting!

i’m surprised we don’t get to see his compaq laptop there in the jag with him.

could’ve been a beautiful multi-tie-in placement.

I love the “Brand New Day” video, however. I only got to see it a couple of times and thought it was great. I should get my butt busy and buy the CD. Isn’t that Stevie Wonder playing harmonica in the background in “Brand New Day”?

That is most definitely Stevie.

Yes, it’s Stevie Wonder. He also got James Taylor to help out, and Branford, of course.

Hate Sting since the police, hate the song. I always thought he was singing about L.A. Something about desert rose in LA. I see the sun in LA. Oh well, shows what I know.

Isn’t there some law that any Sting song has to involve an umbrella that isn’t big enough somEwhere in it?

No, I just think there’s a law that says that Sting has to continure to play of the fact that he used to be cool. It somehow managed to get passed in both the US and the UK.
(Onion article by Sting–“I remember, I was cool once”)

StinK stank stunk!

now I’m sad. I’m going to see Sting in a month. And I like Sting. sniff

Zoing, you WILL NOT be disappointed! I can’t get the concert from this weekend out of my head.

These others are jealous of Sting’s talent.

I think the western world can pretty much be divided between Sting-lovers and Sting-haters. No one is really Sting-neutral.

LOL I would say you’re right most of the time. I can’t figure my husband out though. He complained about buying me the tickets to the concert for my birthday, even though I never asked him to. Then he seemed to enjoy himself at the concert. He kept saying how no men were there without a woman dragging them there and stuff like that but yet he was singing and dancing with everyone else.

Maybe he’s not so much Sting-neutral as a closet Sting fan. I don’t know.

Great Sig SoMoMom

I was Sting-Nuetral until I met my BF, and he crammed Sting music down my throat. I must have listened to “Ten Sumner’s Tales” about 2000 times. Now I love Sting, and I’m going to a concert in less than two weeks!!!

OOPS! Did we hijack this thread? We don’t seem to be talking about Desert Rose at all. Sorry, Zero. BTW, I didn’t really understand what Sting was singing in Desert Rose when I heard it on the radio either. It was LOUD and clear in concert though. Very pretty, now I like it as much as his other songs.

I loved Desert Rose the first time I heard it. I read the lyrics and I think it is about the Garden of Eden or “The Fall”. Mainly because of the last verse.
BTW, here are the lyrics in full. I found them @ http://www.stingchronicity.co.uk/lydesros.html

Oh, thanks, pepper! If I didn’t have enough trouble trying not to spend all of my time surfing, you give this address for this extremely interesting site. I guess I’ll just have to forget about sleep tonight so that I can finish reading it.

Seriously, thank you.
