I’ve been reading a lot about the stock market lately. I asked over in GenQues if anyone could direct me to a website that allowed you to play the market in a pretend portfolio. In the end I found a site on my own.
But, not only can I play a pretend portfolio, I can create a game that allows others to compete with me!
So, I hereby announce the opening of the SDMB Stock Market Challenge!
Head over to InvestSmart. You will need to click “Market Simulation” then “Stock Market Game.” There will be a button to create an account, hen, click on “Join Game.”
Our game is called “SDMB” (no quotes), and the group password is the Great One’s first name (no caps).
The game begins today (The sixth) and ends on December 31st. Whoever wins will be crowned the Champion Teeming Millionaire!

I didn’t read carefully enough.
When you get to their site, click “Market Simulation” then “Educator” and look for a link to their “New Stock Market Game.” (I can’t give you the URL because everything appears in frames.) Once you get to the page about the New Game, look for the Registration button. Click it, sign up, then Join the game.
In short, these are the clicks you need to make:

Now, let’s see if anyone shows up.
Yeah, I registered too, and then it wouldn’t let me back in. I get the “invalid password” error and trying to retrieve it tells me there’s no registered user with my e-mail address. So, I tried to re-register and it says there’s already an UncleBeer, choose another damn name. Maybe I’ll fool with it later when I’ve got more time. It’s a challenge now. The bastards.

You need to be sure to click the link for the new stock game… otherwise you will be trapped in the land of the “old” stock game. (I have no idea what the difference is either ;).)
Once you’ve clicked on the New Game, log in (top of the page). That should do it.

Zette, you appear to be in and ready to trade. I still gotta say, that site is a bitch to use. Very poorly organized. Anyway, I’m in and have bought my first stocks. I’ve found it’s easier to use a different reporting/searching service in a separate browser window. And, thanks, sdimbert, this is a great idea.
UB, you are right… the site sucks. But, let’s think of it as a minimum requirement for joining… you have to be stiff-necked enough to make the damn thing work to get in!

I’m in, and I’ve already made $532. Eat my dust! Or my shorts, or something.
This is going to be fun- too bad it only runs for 1 quarter. I bought a lot of stock that I hoped would do well for the X-mas season.
I also discovered that it is a pain in the ass to check the stock quotes and such and have to use the back button to do a transaction. I used “shift, click” to open the quote part in another browser window. I’m getting used to the site, I guess.
