On the bright side, maybe they have illegally archived some our “Winter of Missed Content”, and we could get some of it back.
Eh…considering how corrupted some of those threads are (with ‘extra’ postings and many original postings missing), I don’t see how anything they preserved from that disaster could be terribly useful with no way to check original posts from the interpolated blather.
Is it even possible that someone could have THAT much time?
I’m just pissed that no-one has stolen MY stuff. 
Likewise, I don’t know whether to be insulted or not. After a fairly extensive search, I couldn’t find a single post of mine that had been copied.
Maybe it’s because I sign my name in every post?

But apparently, not those snobby rip-off (artists? nah) folks over there. Hmph.

But they have an entire forum devoted to bodily functions! We only have the occasional zit or weiner thread here.

I also find interesting how they stole sig lines from around here. For example, in this copied thread, they have a character named Hillbilly-Queen who has the signature line of clayton_e here.
And it seems strange that they’d copy names of people who haven’t been around much in years. Contestant #3? kellibelli? And the way they morph some of them – A Monkey With A Big Gun? Warm Buttered Toast?

Well somebody zombied a 5 year old thread about 3 weeks ago, and that’s probably where they got kellibelli and Contestant #3.
There’s some sort of pattern to this, and damned if I know exactly what, but it seems that a large number of the older names that have been borrowed are from people who were in #straightdope chat from about 2000-2002 or so (although not all, by any means, I’m just saying that the number taken from there is perhaps not coincidental, and I never went there until 2001 myself.)
I wonder if this is perhaps a disgruntled doper from a few years back.
I noticed they don’t seem to rate limit searches, which is a pretty intensive operation. It would be interesting if all our searches made their server fall over. Not that I’m suggesting anything.
lel, my username in #straightdope (and IRC in general) is XX01XX. I’m pretty sure most people thing I’m a bot due to my general lack of activity, anyway. I still got mirrored (and other than the fact that they link to my homepage, there’s nothing really obvious that it’s not just someone else using 1010011010), for whatever reason, in October of 2003. I haven’t seen any of my posts over there, though.
It looks like they steal the first page or two of the thread, and then depend on their users (assuming they have any. What looks like original content to us might just be stolen from some other board.) to to carry the thread from there, or not… generally looks like not.
Was there ever a tattooed 30-something female doper from Los Angeles named Lisa, who was fascinated with Bettie Page and pugs?

PLEASE- for the love of all that is good and holy, don’t ever allow ‘avatars’ here on the Dope. Looking at a few of those zombie threads reminded me why I rarely venture out there. Sure, a few of them were clever, but most are just silly and distracting. Bleaghhhh.

Brief hijack: I allow avatars on my board, but only for users that have 25 or more posts. Avatars are limited to 80x80 pixels and 3K maximum, with no animation. They don’t look too bad when they’re used properly; see this thread (very safe for work) for an example.
I can’t speak for the SDMB, but I think on this message board, mods and admins have enough to worry about without bringing avatars into the picture; keeping inappropriate avatars out, preventing bandwidth theft, and other such nuisances. It’s not a problem when you have about 2,000 users. With 20,000, it would be a mess.

Same OP, same picture, and there were things left out. The Cockadoodledoo (that was a pain to type) post was made a good while after the one Cynical_Gabe made here. This could actually be crossposting, but I find it funny that the pic used at the Cock boards was the only one of **Cynical_Gabe’s ** that was avatar-sized.

Actually back in the days before the SDMB went to a paid site, I did help Sniffs register her username so she could ask her own damn questions! 
She used to tell me “hey, ask the dopers…”. I think she only ever posted once. Since then, I assume her username has been eaten by the hamsters.
So I take it my chicken doppelganger is Sniffs?
I did some more looking around, and didn’t see any correlation between users here and their reported alter-egos on the bizarro Dope. A bizarro Dope user/sock could have reposted messages from any number of users here.
