Stolen content. Again.

They even stole our Celeb Death Pool picks.

The bastids.

Disconcerting… Sniffs is not my chicken doppelganger as I am listed separately. Including my location. Oddly (and most annoyingly) they’ve got listings for AIM, Yahoo Messenger, and an email address – none of which are mine, but are similar enough that I’m a little peeved.

The avatar sucks and the posts are brain damaged…er,… actually some of them look like stuff lieu would post (e.g. “Viva la prehensile rectum!”).

Whatever. Meh. Hope the site gets shut down soon.

Is that why the boards have been slow lately? Someone is trolling for content?

And how do you know if your SDMB identity has been stolen? Am I over there?

And how did you stumble across it, Eats Crayons?

Sorry, that last question was for racinchikki. :smack:

Nope. Don’t feel bad, I’m not over there either.

Are they stealing just from us, or from other message boards? Is Fark content over there?

They’ve got a memberlist. And no, you’re not there.

I’m actually steering clear of that place. Who knows what they’re up to. I really don’t like the idea that they seem to have looked at my SDMB profile to create such a close similar info though. Not happy about that at all.

When I looked yesterday the name “Goo” was attributed to a stolen SDMB post that I created. But other “Goo” posts seem to have been SDMB posts created by others.
Which probably means their socks appear schitzo to anyone trying to get an ego read on them.

So they’ve stolen my content but have failed in capturing my effervescent personality. :stuck_out_tongue:

The names aren’t exact mirrors of username or posting history as all three posts of mine that I’ve seen have each attributed to different users.

Without knowing a whole lot about how this type of thing is done, and where and how different member information is stored, and that some user info is mimicked/replicated- is there any reason for us to be concerned over our credit card information and such?

I highly doubt it. All of the information they have reposted is freely available to anyone (guests can look at profiles, right?), and the credit card numbers are not.

Well we don’t really know it’s the webmistress doing this, do we? It could conceivably be a group of members doing this without her knowledge. Unless I’ve missed some evidence, of course.

Yeah, weird. There doesn’t seem to be any consistent mapping of user to post. For example, my post in the “three things you’d never do” thread is attributed to one user “Miss Duff”, but my OP of “Scary as a child never - but NOW YIKES!” was attriubted to a different poster, “Sarah”.

However, “Sarah” has a lot of other doper posts that I recognize and at least one other post of mine (where I described my striped PJs).

It’s really werid. By the theft of OPs and such it look like they were padding their board, but the user to post mapping is all jumbled.

Bizarro Board indeed.

Do do dodo do do dodo squeeee (Twilight Zone music)

Am I actually posting to the SDMB or am I posting to a message board in an alternate universe that is being duplicated here? Could it be that I am not indecisive1? Could I actually be inde-doodle-doo but because of a freak shift in the time-space continuem at birth I am doomed to a never ending…

Oops there I go again. Sorry, never mind.

Is CynicalGabe still around? Perhaps he should be told. I wonder if there are other stolen Doper pictures in any of their three million threads to do with one another’s photographs.

I am undecided if I’ll be joining the Straight Dope (because I am not sure I have enough to contribute in order to be an asset to this board) but I would like to know if that bizarre message board can be prevented from stealing and posting more content?

Has anyone heard of this happening before? I haven’t. It makes me totally rethink how I view online message boards. Not only does the stolen content disturb me, but also, imagine being the lone genuine person posting away merrily and thinking ‘what a great community’! What an interesting situation we have here.

You should view the online world even more pragmatically than you do the real one when it comes to security. Everything you do is public and can and probably is viewed by at least hundreds, if not thousands, or millions depending on where you make your presence known.

Speaking of which, you shouldn’t feel the need to justify *your *presence here. The SDMB charter may be to fight ignorance but there is a lot more here besides GQ and GD, where the fight against it is ostensibly fought. Some threads even foster it and the rest are there for entertainment purposes alone.

The only reason you should base your joining on is whether or not you like it here enough to pay $15.

A selection of their many fora:

Sounds like my kind of place…

Hey! In the Dopplegangland Doper reality, I get to be Eve! I’m so happy!

But I have a stupid sig line. Isn’t that from Magnolia? Ugh. And, uh, a little ironic given our Eve’s history?

(Presumably, their Beast of Meat and Hair is a little more hygenic than ours.)

Well that certainly didn’t stop me!

You don’t need to be a rocket surgeon to fit in here, just a good sense of humor, and occasionally a thick hide. The rest takes care of itself.

BTW - as was mentioned earlier, this has happened before, and will again. Eh, no biggie.

The Chicago Reader, if I understand this correctly, holds the copyright to everything everyone posts here, except that individual users are allowed to republish their own work. It seems like basic copyright infringement. (NOTE: I am not a lawyer of any sort, nor do I play one on TV)

You know, over the last 2 weeks or so, I’ve had a expotential increase in Spam at my hotmail addy.

Connection?
