The great (maybe greatest) concert film, Stop Making Sense is going to be re-released in theaters to celebrate the 40th (yikes) anniversary of the movie.
I see that the album is also being re-released on vinyl and, for the first time it will include songs that were not in the original theatrical or album release.
I saw this movie in theaters when it first came out and I have owned it on VHS, DVD and Blu-Ray. I can’t wait for the chance to see it in a theater again.
I re-watched it fairly recently (a couple years ago) on a streaming channel and it holds up great. I don’t care about the criticism that it’s overproduced and not completely ‘live’; it’s a fantastic show.
And it produced one of my favorite live albums; one of the rare live albums where every song is better than the studio version. But the concert has so much more content that’s left off the album-- they should have made it a double length album.
The new album will add back the songs ‘Cities’ and ‘Big Business/ I Zimbra’ that were not in the movie or on the album. When I first saw the movie on VHS it had those songs included. Big Business was phenomenal and I was always a bit pissed off that it wasn’t on the album. What I don’t know is if the songs are added back into the movie. On the home video versions those 2 songs are in a different aspect ratio.
This should be required viewing to anyone under 40 so that they can know the experiance of how a live performance should be done. It’s a masterpiece, the music, the songs and the perfomers hold up well. It could have been done yesterday and still would be a huge hit, maybe even bigger (along with Davids big cloths!).
Talking Heads is one of those bands that I love but sometimes neglect. I sort of forget about them until I am reminded of how great they were. Then I listen to them and fall in love all over again.
A friend of mine felt that way about Home of the Brave by Laurie Anderson. He plugged his tape deck into the audio outputs of a VCR and made a recording of it. I watched it along with him and became something of a fan.
Agree with both points. I may object to it being considered a truly “Live” album, but that doesn’t lessen my enjoyment of the music and performance. In fact, I was blasting out “Burning Down the House” from that album just yesterday. I made the cats dance with me.
It popped up on my YouTube and that version of “Burning Down the House” is my favorite. If I had seen that movie when I was younger, I probably would have been more inclined to go to rock concerts.
I saw it with friends in the theatre back in 1984 or 1985. It had a cult following like The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Everyone rushed to the screen (there was a stage in front at the Princess Theatre in Edmonton) and danced and did all the moves along with David Byrne. It was incredible.
Belew is amazing. I saw that 1980 tour, and this video captures really well the lovely, lovely sounds he made. You can really just put this on in the background and enjoy it.
