Stop Making Sense (2023) {Talking Heads}

The great (maybe greatest) concert film, Stop Making Sense is going to be re-released in theaters to celebrate the 40th (yikes) anniversary of the movie.

I see that the album is also being re-released on vinyl and, for the first time it will include songs that were not in the original theatrical or album release.

I saw this movie in theaters when it first came out and I have owned it on VHS, DVD and Blu-Ray. I can’t wait for the chance to see it in a theater again.

I re-watched it fairly recently (a couple years ago) on a streaming channel and it holds up great. I don’t care about the criticism that it’s overproduced and not completely ‘live’; it’s a fantastic show.

And it produced one of my favorite live albums; one of the rare live albums where every song is better than the studio version. But the concert has so much more content that’s left off the album-- they should have made it a double length album.

The new album will add back the songs ‘Cities’ and ‘Big Business/ I Zimbra’ that were not in the movie or on the album. When I first saw the movie on VHS it had those songs included. Big Business was phenomenal and I was always a bit pissed off that it wasn’t on the album. What I don’t know is if the songs are added back into the movie. On the home video versions those 2 songs are in a different aspect ratio.

Big Business/ I ZImbra live.

Also on YouTube you can find the band performing ‘The Great Curve’ live in Italy somewhere. That is the one song I really wish was in the movie.

This should be required viewing to anyone under 40 so that they can know the experiance of how a live performance should be done. It’s a masterpiece, the music, the songs and the perfomers hold up well. It could have been done yesterday and still would be a huge hit, maybe even bigger (along with Davids big cloths!).

Actually, I have found lots of YouTube videos of reactions to ‘Life During Wartime’. It seems that everyone who watches it, loves it.

I wore this t-shirt playing pickleball last weekend. Alas, about 20 people in the 50-65 age range and nobody got the reference.

I want that shirt…

Seriously?!? Hopefully that was just a once in a lifetime occurrence.

So do I!

That is very sad.

Talking Heads is one of those bands that I love but sometimes neglect. I sort of forget about them until I am reminded of how great they were. Then I listen to them and fall in love all over again.

Thanks for the reminder.

mmm

A friend of mine felt that way about Home of the Brave by Laurie Anderson. He plugged his tape deck into the audio outputs of a VCR and made a recording of it. I watched it along with him and became something of a fan.

Agree with both points. I may object to it being considered a truly “Live” album, but that doesn’t lessen my enjoyment of the music and performance. In fact, I was blasting out “Burning Down the House” from that album just yesterday. I made the cats dance with me.

They were not amused.

Well, sure. Cats actually yearn to dance, up until you try to make them.

Same as it ever was.

It popped up on my YouTube and that version of “Burning Down the House” is my favorite. If I had seen that movie when I was younger, I probably would have been more inclined to go to rock concerts.

I saw it with friends in the theatre back in 1984 or 1985. It had a cult following like The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Everyone rushed to the screen (there was a stage in front at the Princess Theatre in Edmonton) and danced and did all the moves along with David Byrne. It was incredible.

This is not my beautiful shirt!

Featuring a very skinny Adrian Belew in fine form on lead guitar.

It’s on etsy.

Belew is amazing. I saw that 1980 tour, and this video captures really well the lovely, lovely sounds he made. You can really just put this on in the background and enjoy it.

Also one of my favorite live albums as well. I’m perhaps most fond of this spare version of Thank You For Sending Me An Angel.

You can see the full Rome concert referenced above here.

Great song, but yeah I don’t think ‘The Great Curve’ was played at all during that tour, having been dropped to make way for newer material.
