I have limited cabinets in my kitchen, but there’s a decent amount of space between the top of the fridge and the ceiling. Is it a bad idea to put stuff on top of a refrigerator??
We do.
You should allow some air space between the back of the fridge and the wall, and leave that space open to the room (don’t pack the to of the fridge sold to the ceiling).
It would be no different than if the fridge was in a built in cabinet space. I’d mount a shelving unit above instead of sitting stuff on the fridge itself.
Only if it looks like this.
People still have free-standing refrigerators?
Yep. And some people even have non-heated toilet seats!!
I have a heated bathroom floor and padded toilet seat, does that count?
Dennis
It gets Dusty on top of the fridge. I wouldn’t store plates or cups up there.
We’ve always stored the empty, plastic cake carrier and lid up there. The big round kind that’s used for church functions and parties at work.
It uses up too much cabinet space. The top of the fridge is a good alternative. The lid gets Dusty and needs a wipe off with a wet sponge.
I have never seen a fridge that *wasn’t *free standing. What sort are you talking about?
I store large bowls and platters on top of the fridge. Very large stuff, I have had a lot of catering supplies and this is the stuff I’ve kept for parties, family dinners and so forth. They’ll get dusty but I keep a platter upside down on the stack of bowls and a quick rinse is sufficient to make them usable. I’ve found if I keep anything frequently used on top of the fridge I’ll frequently be searching all over the kitchen for it before I think to look up there.
I believe he’s referring to those recessed refrigerators that are sunk into the wall or cabinets.
No. Unless, like mine, the refrigerator is placed such that, if something fell behind it, you’d have to pull it out of its little alcove to retrieve it.
The back is sealed, so it wouldn’t be a huge deal if something non-perishable fell down there, but I only keep stuff up there that’s big enough so it can’t. Bags of chips, boxes of crackers.
Like most people, we keep big items that don’t easily fit anywhere else up there: vases mostly, plus cake tins and some big platters that are rarely used.
What I have learned by experience, is to be careful to push stuff back from the top of the door. I had a nice cut glass vase fall on my head one morning after I had put it up the evening before. Not bad enough for a trip to A&E, but it was pretty sore.
Sounds like an A & E show, actually. My Refrigerator Tried To Kill Me.
And why would this even be a problem? My fridge fits just below a cabinet with maybe and inch of space between them
They are called built-in refrigerators. They can be designed to accept wood panel doors to make them look like they are part of the cabinetry.
I was wondering about that myself. I don’t think I know a single person who has a fridge that is built into the cabinetry. I know they exist, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one in real life.
I inherited an antique Japanese vase and gave it to my daughter. She keeps it on top of the refrigerator, despite my pleas not to do so.
We got this too. I keep the alcohol and candy up there. Little kids can’t climb that high without assistance.
Problem is that since we put the cabinet in, standard fridge size has changed. We had trouble last fall finding one to fit into the existing space. Limited our options when a vast majority of the current offerings are 30mm too high.
You are obviously a very rich person who comes from a very rich background and lives among the very rich and never, ever visted someone who also wasn’t very rich. At least, that’s my guess.
