''Stove Top Stuffing'' in Britain

What is Stove Top stuffing (Cornbread) called in British supermarkets?

Paxo stuffing

Thanks. Do they make any with corn meal (maize)? Does Kraft sell any of it’s brands in Britain?

Not really, Paxo still has to be cooked in the oven, either inside a bird or on a baking sheet. I’ve never come across any kind of instant stuffing over here.

Instant stuffing is just a box of croutons and a broth packet not too different from the one in ramen.

Surely the boxed stuff is just flavorings and the dry ingredients and you could make it from scratch easily.

Even when I was a kid in the 60s my Yorkshire born mum used to make up a separate batch of stuffing in the frying pan while the turkey was resting. It was just the same ingredients cooked in butter and some fat from the roasting pan. It came out far more delicious than the stuff that went in the bird.

I still do the same thing. I also do variants. Rather than coat things in all the layers of stuff to crumb them I make a crumble like topping and fry it on top or alongside fish, meat or vegetables and slide it on for serving. It’s really easy to come up with a mixture of herbs, nuts, spices, grains and things that set a particular mood.

I don’t think the concept of “cornbread” is too popular in the UK.

Because you can’t boil it?

As someone who has lived in GB, I say “Good one!”

(FTR, I love the place! :o )

Read a food blog writ by a Brit a few years back. Apparently, what Americans call “cornbread” isn’t easy to get, although it’s easy enough to make from scratch with cornmeal, a recipe, and other things commonly available in Blighty.

The blogger’s cornbread came out fine judging from the pictures, and was cut up and served at a dinner party, to the surprise of the guests, who found it a bit crumbly, but otherwise delicious. But the impression I came away with was that “cornbread is not a thing in Britain, as a rule.”

Of course, things change in a few years, and I’ve found cornbread in a British supermarket quite recently.

Can’t recall ever seeing any stove-top stuffing, though.

I’ve even seen croutons specifically made for stuffing. In fact, it made me wonder if I could just use regular croutons. I think the only difference in the others was that they were made with cornbread.
