Often times I use words from hip-hop or beatnik culture cause I like the way they feel. Sometimes people don’t get the meaning, and thus I start this thread. This is where I will now post the answer to any questions I get about definitions of words I use.
First:
5000 - This term means goodbye basically. It is short for Audi 5000 which is a type of car. Hip-hop heads use to say I’m out, which sounded like Audi. So saying “I’m Audi 5000” came to mean “I’m Out”. And then later they just used the “5000” part. So 5000=“I’m out” (ref. “Live at E’s” - sublime)
Now this thread is not just for me. Alot of the very clever wordsmiths around here come up with some great words. So throw any good words you see anyone use in here for easy reference. I propose ageless6’s following word for entry into the Lexicon of this board:
Hipnessaucity - The art of drinking or “liquid hipness”
How to speak Hip - A comedy album from the 50’s by Del Close and John Brent. It is, admittedly, the inspiration for my posting as Beatnik DaLovin’. Del Close(Rest in Peace) was a genius. Even Cecil agrees. He has contributed to Cecil’s column, and is one of the select few to recieve his praise.
“How to Speak Hip” is a parody of all those “How To” records that used to come out. There is a charachter (Mr. Geets Romo), who is interviewed by a very non-hip Host. The record is supposed to be for square suburbanites to learn how they too can speak the hip language. It is a goof, but at the same time really does explain what it takes to be cool. It makes fun of hipsters, and makes fun of squares. Great stuff.
Some quotes (from memory):
“So the phrase ‘I dig’ not only means ‘I understand’, but ‘I am a special sort of person, who understands in a very special way’ Correct?”
“Being hip is essentially performing the exact right action at all times, in all situations. This is not an easy thing.”
For some reason, I can’t see how these thing become popular. Why not just say, “See ya!” or “Goodbye!”?
It’s the same thing with “Malcolm” for the drug Ecstacy. “Malcolm, like Malcolm X, like how Esctacy sounds like it starts with an X and stuff!” You want Ecstacy? Say “Pass me the Ecstacy,” or “Want some Ecstacy?” or something. I mean I can see not being able to say “Ecstacy” while you’re incoherent on the stuff, but I still don’t get it. Or “fosheezee” for “for sure!”. How is that better? The word “yeah” goes a long way.
I’m probably just unhip. Or maybe I like not having to decode conversation. Uh, 5000.

This is YOUR lexicon of slang, nobody else here talks like that, calling it the Straight Dope Lexicon would inply that it is a lexicon of slang that DOPERS use.

I’ve never asked anyone, “Hey, what’s that mean?” You can basically tell what someone is saying based on context. Also, if you hear words often enough, the meaning becomes apparent.
Some people are just really ridiculous.

My family thinks I’m officially insane. I’m sitting at my chair sounding out any possible way I can think of to say “I’m out” and making it sounds like Audi. Even my dog is giving me funny looks.

Well in my day the only hip word we had was dirt
and we were damn glad to have it ! We didn’t go shortening it, we didn’t do nothing but hang around the tar pits all day saying dirt ugha dirt ooogha dirt !
And we were happy ! Kids today, got to have a million different words !

Just as a pointer, if my following a conversation of yours is contingent upon my use of reference materials, you are not communicating well. I suggest the use of English in the future.
