It’s about time Jor-el’s “someone close to you will die” IOU gets called in. That’s just sort of been floating out there with no real purpose, other than the occasional angsty-Clark moment.
Personally, I think the whole Lana-Clark relationship has pretty much been played out. At least it looks like they’re getting past the “will he tell her or won’t he” based on a scene in last week’s “next week on Smallville” where {spoilered since I’m not sure if it’s been in the ads} it appeared to show Clark proposing to Lana in the Fortress of Solitude
Obviously, tonight’s ep is going to provide a big shock to Clark, which may work to get him into more of a superhero mode. My guesses for who’s taking the fall are:
[ul]
[li]Lana. The ads are definitely giving a strong impression that she’s getting into danger, but then again, when has that not been the case?[/li][li]Jonathan. A history of heart problems, a stressful political campaign (including one assasination attempt), and there was a brief shot of him taking a pill a couple weeks ago (heart medication?). That was just before one of those threatening phone calls from the psycho “Students for Lex” group. Then there’s the chance (slim, but possible) that Lex may want to win that Senate seat so bad that he takes that step he rejected from SfL girl.[/li][li]Martha. A dark horse, but would provide the same story push as either of the above.[/li][/ul]
Another thing that could result from Jonathan’s death is that the loss of his Earth father could push Clark back to Jor-el.
Really, the only “safe” characters are Lois and Lex. We’re probably meant to think that it’s Lana, but a switcheroo is always in the cards.
Besides, if they off Lana, we won’t get any more of those Woman of Kleenex innuendos about her and Clark’s sex life. In that ep where he was talking to Chloe, and she said something along the lines of “you’re worried that you’d…”, I kept waiting for the “gut her like a trout” response (but then again, I’m a bit of a sick bastard).
It’s nice to know I’m not the only sick bastard around these parts. When Chloe said that, I finished the line for her. My wife was amused.
I’m really hoping they just off Lana. Sure, she’s pretty, but she’s also pretty annoying. Chloe is, in my opinion, ten times hotter… because she’s got a brain.
Don’t even get me started on Lois- I keep waiting for Lois to leave or get killed off, and for Chloe to assume her name. Or something.
Of course, they’ll probably kill Chloe just to piss me off.
It makes the most sense, storyline-wise to kill Lana off.
They’ve tried to make Lana’s character go in different directions over the years but in the end, she’s always the smalltown girl who will eventualy get dumped for Miss Metropolis.
Apparently she’s going to learn of his secret tonight. That alone carries a death sentence for 99% of Smallville citizens (or, alternatively, a complete brain wipe).
Lex needs something to give his criminal mastermind plot a swift kick in the arse.
I doubt it will be either Mom or Pop. Lionel’s almost certainly going to start trying to pursue Martha romantically sometime soon and Jonathan needs to be there as the “oh my god, how could you betray me like that? With a LUTHOR (said as Seinfeld would say ‘Newman’)” foil.
So we’ve pretty much decided that this show doesn’t follow the milestones that were in the various preceeding Superman stories (comics, movies, newspaper strips)? Because if so, then Lana can’t die, right? She’s gotta show up again years after Clark leaves Smallville once in awhile.
Since Chloe is a character manufactured for this show, and using Ender’s 99% rule, this means she’s the most likely potential victim.
There was a petition online last Spring to keep John Schneider on the show because there were rumors of him being written off the show. If his heart gives out, it would be true to the Christopher Reeve movies.
My bet is on Lana, who is later to be somehow resurrected, complete with a memory wipe.
Or maybe Pete! Why’d they have him leave the show anyway?
In the first season, they already played the “someone close to you will die” game, and it turned out to be…
the old lady who made that prediction. And, once she died, Clark sighed with relief that she must have been the one she predicted.
Spoiler tags for those who are just getting into the series.
Well, I didn’t expect to be right twice. Lana learned Clark’s secret, accepted his proposal, spilled the possibility of Clark’s secret to Lex, died, and got a memory wipe (due to the temporal reboot), then broke up with Clark all in one episode. That must be some kind of Smallville record.
And it’s looking more likely that Lionel knows what’s going on with Clark, but that’s been getting hinted at for a couple of seasons. He (or the writers) certainly knows how to keep his cards close to his chest.
And based on the previews for next week, Clark’s not so much going into “superhero mode” as I thought, but vigilante crimefighter. It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out.
I was so happy that they killed off Lana. I actually thought it was going to stick. I saw no way out for the writers. And then the time travel dues ex machina came into play. What the hell is this? Star Trek?
Shame about John Schneider getting written off the show. He was one of my favorite characters.
I thought it was a gyp. First kill off Lana, then a temporal reboot, then kill off Jonathan. C’mon, John Schneider was one of the best things the show had going for it!
Man was I pissed. The Lana thing made sense to me. It would finalize the animosity between Lex and Clark and the guilt and denial might send Lex into his evil future. Dam they’ve got three cute girls on the show but only one Dad. I thought Senator Kent would be good fodder for future stories too.
Has anyone heard rumors that Schnieder wanted off the show to pursue something else? CRAP! CRAP!
I’ve always wondered why Clark could have two friends who know his secret but couldn’t tell the woman he loved or see that he either had to tell her or let her go. Now he had to lie to her again to save her life. Why didn’t he propose and then make her promise not to go see Lex?
It’ll be interesting to see where the writers go from here.
Any guesses on next weeks masked lady? Some DC charecter? Black Canary perhaps?
It’s too bad Jonathan had to die but I saw no possible way around it. OK, maybe one possible way, but it is so far fetched as to be considered science fiction.
Basically you’d need
someone with enough strength to pick him up
and someone with enough speed to carry him all the way to
a location nearby where they perform lifesaving techniques on a weekly basis.
But the confluence of those three things happening to the Kent family stretches the imagination to its breaking point.
My guess is that next week will be Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl, if it really is anyone. I think it would be great if it were the Huntress, but gut says BG.
And all I could do was say Crap for the last half of the show! I agree Schneider is one of the best things going on it, and to see Lionel’s intentions to Ma Kent was just plain creepy.
Anyone thing She’ll take his seat in the senate? That would be pretty cool.
I was happy with the first part of the episode. I don’t much care for Lana. Lex’s anger there was great, and I felt the series would have been much stronger than done the other way.
Pa Kent’s “GRR I hate Luthor they’re all bad salt of the earth Luthor GRR” bit was getting old. There was a theory floating around that there would be 2 deaths: Jor-El would possess Lionel and use him to kill Pa Kent, which would also kill Lionel from the strain. Fun!
It would be hilarious if the next episodes just didn’t mention the death at all, and no one acts any diffirently. After all, it’s not like they’ve forgotten other dead people very easily. Also, I was waiting for Lana to ask “Who else knows?”
Her name is Maya (played by a former Ms. Universe with a latin surname Quinones I believe) so I’m revising my guess to possibly a version of Wildcat from the 80’s. I believe her name was Yolanda however and that she’s since been knocked off by the PTB. It was the bumbling and bespecataled part that led me to the BG conclusion.
Of course, it could be someone completely made up by them in a maddened licensing insanity frenzy.
Damn… well, at least we had a few minutes of Lana being dead. Man, I hate her.
Hey, Clark- sure, you went back in time and made it Didn’t Happen… and then your father got deadified as a result. It’s not too late to kill Lana again, anyway, so the day won’t be a complete wash. Please?
In both the comics and the Christopher Reeve movie sequence, Lana was around as an adult. So, annoying though the character is on the TV series, they can’t bump her off anymore than they could bump off Lex or Lois.
In the very old comics (pre-1978ish), the George Reeves TV show, and the Christopher Reeve movies, Jonathan was dead, and that prompted Clark’s move to Metropolis. So this is canonical, although disappointing. (I’m not sure about the post-Crisis comics.)
