Chloe back from the dead.
Lana faked her death.
Evil Clark destroyed.
Lex in jail.
And the final jump:
Kara (Supergirl) is here.
Enough “jump the shark” cliches for you?

Chloe had to come back from the dead or there would be a lot of unhappy fans. So I think any explanation of her coming back would be okay with fans and not at all shark jumpy. I suppose her power is to give her life force to someone else and then she reboots and starts over. Which is better than a one time use stupid power, use once and you die for keeps.
We all knew Lana had faked her death.
I’m glad they didn’t drag out the evil Clark battle over several episodes, then again they could always have him reappear again somehow.
How is Lex in jail shark jumpy? Certainly he deserves it for all the many things he’s done and isn’t it Superman canon that Lex spent time in jail? I guess he can get off if they can prove Lana’s death was faked but I don’t know how he’s going to explain the dead lawyer in the cell with the big hole in his stomach.
I have to agree. I think most fans made these calls at the end of last season.
I do think it’s getting about time for tights, though. I don’t think I could take another season of angsty annoying Clark. Besides, I thought he was going to be doing the Jor-El training.
Chloe’s burning her death certificate is bugging me. I figured she was going to stay “dead”, and start doing the Watchtower role full time.
As Wile E said, keeping Chloe dead would’ve pissed off a lot of fans. Me included- she’s pretty much the only reason I keep watching the show.
Is the shark jumped if you see it coming from miles away? We all knew the bitch wouldn’t stay dead, even though she’s the one character the show could completely do without. How the hell does she stay on the show?
Well, he wasn’t very interesting, anyway. He didn’t even talk like Bizarro.
I think this is actually a pretty good idea. Of course, it’s kind of silly that someone as rich as Lex would do any time in jail, considering the weakness of the case against him- Lana’s body wasn’t found, so they can’t even be sure she’s dead. I guess the only reason he’s doing time is that he feels he deserves it… which, actually, could be interesting.
Well, yeah- I have to agree with this particular parabolic piscine. Hey, at least she’s pretty, right?
Like Maus Magill, I was surprised to see Chloe burn the death certificate. I was kind of hoping she’d kill off Lois and steal HER identity. Chloe would make a much better Lois than Lois does.
Here’s a little thing that bothered me. When they were marching Lex to a cell at the end, would anyone have mentioned, “Gee, how come the door to your old cell was torn off its hinges, and why does your lawyer have a fist-sized hole in his gut?”
Even sillier thing, what was making the light flash on Lex at the end. Looked like a fan of some sort, but I didn’t see one or easily see why they would have a fan in prison.
There were a few plots holes like that but it’s Smallville and I’m not expecting Emmy quality writing. Like why was there a death certificate for Lana in the morgue when there was no actual dead Lana? Did whomever helped her fake her death provide a nice charred corpse to be identified as her? Or did they just type up a death certificate and leave it in the morgue as proof that Lana snuffed it? They also sure moved Chloe to the morgue pretty fast. And the doctor won’t tell Clark she’d dead but the nurse did.
I hope that if they keep Martian Manhunter around he gets to do more than be Clark’s cheerleader.
Any one or even two of the above would be cliche, but okay. But it’s like the writers said “Let’s shoot them all and let the fans sort it out.”
I love the idea of Chloe stealing Lois’s identy. I don’t know who that chick is, but she is not the real Lois Lane.
I liked it mostly. The bizaro fight wasn’t too protracted. Although the “sunlight heals all wounds” was a bit much. I actually liked the way the actor handled the other role.
Chloe coming back is a good thing. She’s definatly one of the stronger elements on the show. I agree with Maus in that we all pretty much knew Lana had faked her death.
Are we certain that the new girl is Kara? I admit that part surprised me. I’ll reserve judgment until more of the season unfolds.
And he seemed to indicate near the end that he had been remiss in his duties for training. So I suspect that we’ll have a good bit of that this season.
I missed it. Is it worth tracking it down or should I just start watching next week?
I liked it. I’m glad they didn’t kill Chloe. I’m not a fan of Kara. The first episode she was in, she killed a man for no real reason. That is hardly the behavior I would expect from the woman of steal. This time she saved Lex. Now I won’t say that it’s unbecoming of Supergirl but how ironic that that is the only person she saved.
Now for a brief physics/chemistry problem. The whole “laser eyes on the burst dam” thing. I don’t mind suspending disbeleif but this one bugged me because it was so wrong on so many levels. First of all suddenly converting that volume of water to a gas would result in a shockwave that would pretty well wipe out anyone around. Second, evaporating that volume of water does not negate the inertia it already had. Third wouldn’t the water behind the water that he evaporated just become another wave? How is it that Lex wasn’t boiled alive?
I love that show, but it’s definitely time for Clark to fly.
Nitpick - if they reference the main character as “Clark” instead of “Kal-El” or “Superboy”, why wouldn’t they refer to Kara as “Linda”?
Yeah, that bugged the hell out of me as well. Everyone (okay, every human) within miles would’ve been flashbroiled, if not immediately killed by the resultant shockwave. What, Clark didn’t have time to grab the kid and his dad and run 'em to safety? It wasn’t even that pretty of an effect.
For starters, the Supergirl in comics is just named Kara now. My understanding is there’s no Linda Danvers anymore, at least not on the main version of Earth.
(And they can’t use the term “Superboy” for legal reasons. There’s a lawsuit with the families of the original creators of the Superboy character, so they just don’t use that name, and he’s dead in the comics.)
I don’t think it jumped the shark I think they are throwing in all that they could because the show is going to end this season or the next. I don’t know if it is or not that is just my WAG.
I was so excited about Bizarro from the season finale and then seeing him in this episode I am glad they killed him off so fast. That was not Bizarro.
If they had killed off Cloe I would have been upset. That would have to go down as the lamest super power since the previous incarnation of the universe.
As far as getting Clark into tights already, which I agree, I am assuming they are going to leave that for the very end. I think the very last or second to very last episode is when he will finally put on the tights. We already have the “history” of Kal-El after he put on the tights. This show is all about pre-tights.
And as much as I love this show, been watching since the first episode, I think it is starting to run long. I’d be happy if this was the final season. Clark fights some big baddies, the Justice League becomes official, Lex becomes even less ambiguosly evil and the final shot is of Clark in tights flying off into the sunset.
That ending would make me very happy for the series as a whole.
As to the flying girl.
I assumed that was Wonder Woman ( the post 1987 version) as the girl put the bracelet on before she flew. Also Wonder Woman would fit into the Justice League theme as she was a founder member of the League as is Martian Manhunter, Superman, Flash and Aquaman.
Does Wonder Woman fly these days? Is she blonde? I did notice the bracelet and thought about Wonder Woman, but everybody knows that Linda Carter is Wonder Woman.
Yes, these days she does fly, but I have never seen her as a blonde. So the blonde hair plus the bracelet has me confused. I’m not sure either way. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
Ok I had to look it up and yes the flying girl is:
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Kara
Yes, she does.
No (not usually, anyway), but neither is Lois Lane. And Lana Lang is a redhead.
And The Flash isn’t a con man with 4 different identities. And Cyborg is a good 10 years younger than the rest of the characters used on Smallville. And Brainiac is a Coluan android, not a viral Kryptonian AI.
Chloe Sullivan doesn’t even exist in the comics (although Busiek apparently plans to introduce her).
Smallville isn’t known for sticking to the details of the comics universe…or even the broad strokes, where they feel they can tell a better story by changing something.
Technically, it’s with the families of Siegel and Shuster. They created Superman, but claimed rights to Superboy as well, arguing that he was the same character. This is technically true, of course, but I’m sure that all of us can see why these waters are a bit murky.
Heh. Yeah, I meant to type “the original creators of the Superman character” anyway.
I actually gave up on SMALLVILLE towards the end of last season, for a variety of reasons. And they’ve made no secret about brining in Kara (Supergirl) this season, it’s been well announced everywhere, and that turned me off completely. For Supergirl to be the same age (OK, a few years younger) than Clark, that’s a completely different character from the comics Supergirl, and annoyingly so.
It’s clearly time for Clark to put on tights and cape; under almost any one of the various scenarios from the mythology, that happens around college age or just slightly after. And the big problem remains: how the heck will folks like Lex and Lana fail to recognize Superman, when Clark doesn’t wear glasses?
In short, I though they jumped the shark a season ago.
