I suppose there’d be more fire or righteous indignation if I had been banned for expressing my opinion. Cries of “CENSORSHIP!” or something similar.
Unfortunately, I haven’t a clue why I was banned.
I connected to the server, joined the channel, waited a bit, saw it was idle, and went to do other things. Checking back later, I saw I’d been banned. No reason was given.
Other bans have been placed and removed, yet, four days later, I’ve still got a +b. The Channel is secret, so it will not list /NAMES, so I can’t msg anyone to ask them about it.
I haven’t been in chat in a few days, so I’m not sure what’s going on, but I will say that banning anyone is extremely unusual, so I hope this doesn’t sour you on the whole chatting experience. I’ll post your query over in LiveJournal and see if anyone knows what’s going on.
In the meantime, you might want to contact a mod and ask them to close this thread. They get a little peevish when people bring chat issues onto the board.
It has always been my understanding that we’re not supposed to talk about chat over here. I only bring it up so you’re not surprised when this thread is locked down.
Right you are. Since most of the time they get WAY out of hand and are all inherently personal communications between Dopers, the staff don’t like to see them. Man have we had some GREAT chat-related flamewars. Oughta review them in the archive for a chuckle or two.
What should be made clear is that the Chicago Reader and the Straight Dope, and all “official” incarnations of the SD have nothing to do with #straightdope (or the various LJ communities or any other Doper sites).
I don’t personally recall an outright ban on all mentions of #sd, but I can beleive it.
The point being while this would be a natural choice assume it was an offshoot of the SDMB, it is not, and the staff here wouldn’t be able to help you at all, unless they happened to know who did run #sd and could send you their way.
