Strange board trend

Okay, I have noticed this quite a bit lately and was wondering if anyone could enlighten me on why people do this.

It’s not a rant really but it boggles my mind.

People are quoting an entire post within their post. The whole kit and kaboodle, usually with bold script.

Now my understanding is, rather than quote the entire damn post in one chunk, you pick out the points that pertain to your response. That said, if you have several points about a post you break it down into managable segments so your reader can understand without having to reread the post again and again.

Does that make sense? It’s late and I am sooo tired but thought I would see what those in MPSIMS thought of this trend.

Any answers (that don’t include my entire post in a solid chunk – I know you smart asses out there ;)) to this? It makes no sense.

BTW, the latest one I saw was the first post in a thread, a few posts after the first one seems a little excessive when you quote the entire post in your reply.

< 10 hours of sleep in 2 1/2 days is not good on the body, mind or spirit! >

I’ll venture a guess…either the poster doesn’t know how to trim the excess from the quotation (and doesn’t understand how to preview the post, too), or it’s just plain ol’ fashioned laziness.

Sorry TechChick, I’ve done it before.

In my defense, I usually trim the quote down somewhat, I try to remove the bold tag, and I usually only quote when the post I’m responding to is quite a ways up. I shall stop. [aww hell, I’ll TRY, anyway.]

Damn… I really wanted to quote the entire OP in bold letters, but techchick68 saw it coming.

I think some people quote the entire message to indicate which post they’re replying to, as opposed to which part of the post. Since they can usually simply address the posters by their names, I don’t really see why they bother.

And yes, it annoys the hell out of me as well.

And now, although I’m not supposed to, here is a gratuitous re-posting of the entire OP (including the sig line).

I usually only quote if the post I’m quoting is much earlier in the thread or if there are multiple points I’m making.

I completely understand what you mean. It gets really hard to start picking out the difference from the quotes and the new post, especially with everyone messing up the vb script.

Oooops… I forgot to post the quote in bold caps. :stuck_out_tongue:

< techchick pokes Baglady with a Putz pin  then proceeds to slap Zaphod with a rubber chicken >

hehe

Don’t bite … er… pin… the hand that feeds you!! :stuck_out_tongue:

I feel violated.

It feels nice.

Drives me bonkers, too. Now that the board allows “nested” quotes, it gets really out of hand. Over in GQ, there is a sextuple-nested boldfaced quote. Or so it seems.

Why, Green Bean, that sounds slightly obscene and naughty.

And then they frequently forget to turn off the bolding.

Yeah, this is annoying as hell, especially when the person is quoting a voluminous post and only replying to a fragment of it. I suspect part of the problem is that a lot of people don’t understand how to effectively use ellipses ("…") and brackets () to cut irrelevant stuff out of their quotes.

ahem Guilty as charged.

Last night was the first time I have done such a thing. I was in the middle of responding, when I had a call from da boss man and had to go back into work. Not thinking, I hit the “submit” button when I meant to go with the clear button, and come back later to post.

sorry. :o

Maybe because they don’t know how, and would rather bypass looking stupid if they asked how. Of course no question is stupid, if sincere.

techchick,
I’m one of the guilty ones. I only recently got the balls to even try to quote and it took me a while to play around with it and figure out how it worked.
I spent some quality time over at ATMB reading up on it. That’s a great resource.

I like to quote in boldface because I don’t want my SDMB comrades to confuse MY brilliant theories and musings with the poorly-written and ill-conceived claptrap of others.

What do you mean?

(Sorry kiddo,I just had to do that!)

Anyway, I concur wholeheartedly Techie. It really gets my goat!

I don’t see what the problem is?

I don’t know. Sometimes I think I get a little quote happy, but then again, I try to keep my quotes brief, and try to only use them when the comment I’m responding to isn’t the last post or two. Well, okay, anytime when it may not seem immediately clear what I’m responding to, anyway.

Dammit, Scratch! I was gonna do that!
