Strange, but kind of fun... Is this a thing?

Here’s what happened: I was using Google voice search, and I put my phone down on the seat of the truck between me and my sister. We kept talking without realizing that it was still on and picking up what we said. I then glanced down to see that a number of bizarre web pages had been pulled up. They were all based on Google’s weird interpretation of what we’d both been saying. We kept this up for quite awhile… random phrases, the weirder the better, and seeing how Google interpreted them and what it came up with.

Is this activity a thing? Does it have a name? Has anyone else done it?

My ex-wife and daughter and I had a sorta weird game where we’d agree on a normal word that one might use in conversation that had NO SEXUAL CONNOTATION, such as “tea cozy” or “radial tires.” Then, using different search engines, we’d all use the exact same word, and see how many hits we could get before a porn link showed up. As I recall, excluding dealerships, in 1997, Webcrawler would give you 21 links for “radial tires” before the 22nd led to a porn site. No foolin’.

You seem to have come up with a new variation.

SNERK! I just tried “olive doily” and gave up after about 40 links, but I can see how it could work.

I can honestly say that we weren’t thinking of the porn aspect. There’s one thing I noticed that was very weird, though… how often completely random strings of words and phrases would keep bringing up really offensive sites. And I do not mean anything x-rated. I still haven’t figured that one out, but on the whole, I recommend the random-voice-Google thing for free entertainment.

In all candor, this was back in the nineties, before every search engine began with two dozen commercial paid links… and less filtering.

For reference, some implied cozy connotations: Girl Genius

Some people can instill sexual horror in ANY damn thing.

Phil Foglio is one of those people. Despite “Girl Genius” being fairly soft PG rated territory.
