I go through the local transit center a couple times a week and something has attracted my curiosity for the longest time. On the sidewalk there is a circle, a few feet in diameter. Inside it is white and going from the top to the botom, are Red letters “REDER” Interestingly enough, starting from the left side of the circle are the same letters, and end at the other side in such a way that both REDER’s share the D.
To give you a better idea, this is what the letters look like
R
E
R E D E R
E

Does anyone hae any clue what this is supposed to represent?
Is the sign a metal or plastic piece attatched to the sidewalk, or is it painted onto the sidewalk? If its paint, was it sprayed-on freehand or was it stenciled?
Not that I know the answer in any case, but a clearer description might help others.
Wild guess: a surveying mark, possibly for an aerial survey? It would have to be pretty large for that, though.
It’s painted onto the sidewalk and it looks like it was well measured and planned before hand, as all the letters appear to be the same font, size and distance from each other and the outside of the circle(at least without measuring). So it dosen’t look freehand.
The circle is only about 2 or 3 feet in diameter at the most so I don’t know if that’s big enough to be used for aerial survey.
Perhaps you could ask around the transit center? Perhaps someone who’s worked there for several years might know what it is? I’m guessing it serves a very specific purpose, since Google and other search engines don’t really bring up anything that appears relevant. Maybe it’s the acronym of one of the rail services that operate out of there?
Just an observation; it’s a cross made from the word ‘RED’ written in four directions (toward the centre) - the letters that form the cross are red - is it a reference to the Red Cross?
Could it be Richard Reder Contracting Company of Chester, NJ making their mark onsome public works? It’s not uncommon for sidewalk contractors to place a plastic tab or imprint on a sidewalk as a little marketing. Maybe this Reder chap has decided to see how far he could push it.
