Strange smell in public drinking water

Are there any chemicals that could possibly be used in public drinking water that might smell a bit like raw onions? I ask because from time to time, the water in my shower first thing in the morning seems to give off a faint aroma like this.

So is it my imagination, my horrible sense of smell (BTW- it DOES seem to slightly irritate my eyes), or something toxic?

Is it like Sulphur Dioxide? “Rotten egg” smell.

Some regions have that in well water. The longer the water sits in the pipe, the more of it comes out of solution, so when it comes out the shower head it’s a gas already. Plus showers aerate the water quite a bit, allowing any in solution to escape that much faster.
