Stranger Things 4 trailer [spoilers for season 3 & 4]

The day of the Hawkins lab massacre, when 001 goes bye-bye, was in 1979. The day that Nancy’s diary stops updating is in 1983, the day that Will Byers went missing and El opened up the gate in Season 1.

I sit corrected.

I assumed that is what happened all the way back to season 1. And that they may have done it to many dimensions before, and wanted the same for ours. Stuff “automatically updating” to match stuff in our dimension is an incredibly dumber alternative.

Agreed. The more I think of this, the more messed up it is. El’s reasons for risking everything to get her powers back are: 1) get back at the kids who are picking on her, and more importantly, 2) make Mike love her (again) by becoming the superhero he wants her to be and seems to miss. I really hope the show is not going to frame this as endearing and romantic, but my hopes aren’t high.

While some may find the bullying by Angela to be over the top, I have taught for 20 years and I have seen just as bad. I had 4th graders tell other 4th graders “I hope you get cancer and your hair falls out just like your mom’s.” Same 4th grader told another, younger, student, “I hope you die like your brother did.” (kid being told this had lost his brother to gun violence). So, for me, Angela’s character rings very true.

I just watched the last episode…did anyone else notice this massive Watchmen reference.

Watch this scene from Watchmen. If the time jump does not work, skip to two minutes.

Dr. Manhattan’s origin has the same music and same “calm narration of origin” that Stranger Things has in the final episode around 1 hour, 23 minutes, when Henry explained how he became Vecna.

Man, it’s criminal theft…or a straight up homage?

This is clearly the best season since season 1. Like, no contest. Awesome. Very redemptive for the show, a huge uptick in quality. I was thrilled. Can NOT wait for July.

Started watching S4 yesterday - but turned it off before it was over. Not sure if it was because of the long wait between S3-4, or my recollection that I had not cared for S3 as much as S1-2, but combined with the actors having aged, I couldn’t even remember who many of the various characters were.

When the cheerleader’s mom turned around looking all creepy, my wife said she wasn’t interested in watching any more, and I agreed.

It’s taken me many sittings to watch it, but then I’m old and perpetually distracted.

I do like where things ended in Episode 7, my reservations noted above still holding true though. I still find the Rescue Hopper storyline kinda dull though, and they seem to have forgotten to check back in with our pizza van team, which is a thing that happens when you have too many storylines going on at the same time.

I’ll be intrigued to see of Basketball Captain remains a bad guy or if they end up doing with him what they did with Steve and Billy, both of whom seemed like bad guys but who, when shit started getting real, helped to fight the monster. Steve, of course, ended up being one of the very best characters.

I also cannot be the only person completely, utterly uninterested in Mike as a character.

Agreed. We didn’t realize there would be a second part though, so we got to the last 1h40m episode while thinking “There is a LOT to wrap up but 1h40m is as long as movies so I’m sure they can do it.” Then when it went to credits we freaked out a little before we saw there would be part 2 in July.

Yeah…El’s character is, thus far, not that well developed past quirkiness (Eggos, etc.). Actually she seems to be distinguished by her not having grown that much. As a parent of a talented-yet-troubled teen myself, I find myself hoping she can find a way forward that works.

For example…yes, probably best to stay in CA, and not go back to Hawkins. However, in CA, Joyce should seek some sort of special ed program, because “mainstream” just isn’t great for El at her current level of social development. She needs a little more time to develop, and more socialization before being “thrown into the shark tank” which is what has unfortunately become the case.

His only function now is to moon over El, or else be outraged when she strikes back at her bullies, because apparently that’s only ok when the bullies are male and she hits back using her powers instead of a roller skate.

I still can not believe how identical Dr. Manhattan’s origin story is in the Watchmen movie to the sequence where Henry explains how he became Vecna. I mean, it is one thing to do an homage, another thing to do a parody, but this was borderline stealing/plagiarism the way they used the same music and more or less did the same thing.

I don’t much care for him, either. He was the co-lead in season 1, so I wonder if the producers wanted to back off from that character and let the others shine.

I kind of liked what an annoying little snot he was in Season 3.

The character who is really getting short-changed in Season 4 is Jonathan Byer, IMO. I guess he likes to smoke pot and occasionally mope about Nancy now?

It’s theft…from Koyaanisqatsi.

I agree with that, too. Jonathan is kinda nothing this time around, and I miss him. But hey, y’know, he’s been wrapped so tight for the past three seasons that he probably needs a little chill time.

Yes, I saw/heard this online as well. Can anyone tell me specifically what is the theft from that? I am not familiar with it.

It’s interesting that what started out as the franchise’s two main characters have been allowed to get really stale.

It’s becoming increasingly apparent that Will is gay and has a crush on Mike. I’ll be interested to see how they handle that. Realistically, the likely reaction from a guy from a small Indiana town in 1986 would be to say “ew” followed by homophobic slurs, but they can’t go that far.

At least that relationship has a little more dynamic to it, but it just feels like they don’t have enough time to get everyone in. There are too many characters now.

If Will’s mysterious painting turns out to be anything other than a portrait of Mike (or Will and Mike together), I’m gonna be pissed. Then again, it’s been telegraphed so obviously it would almost be anticlimactic.
